His style was inspired by the late singer Davood Maghami. Dariush performed Maghami's songs first but soon his talent was discovered by song writers such as Janati Ataie and Shahriar Ghanbari.

In 1975 (1354) he was arrested and jailed for the charge of possession of drugs. Some critics reported his arrest because of somewhat political flavors in his songs. Under public opinion pressure, Dariush was released and was forced to sing the notorious song "Rastakhiz" in which he admired the Shah.

In 1978 he was engaged to the modern Iranian music icon Googoosh. After Islamic revolution, Dariush left Iran and took refuge in the U.S.

Currently he resides in his private ranch in New Mexico with his wife and young daughter. Dariush has produced more than 15 albums, the majority being social, political, and tragic songs. He enjoys great popularity among middle-aged Iranians.
