What's up to the people!!! I'm making new songs on the daily. Life is grand. What's new? I guess what's new is that we found a new permanent studio in Hollywood. It will be home to all my favorite things to do -- recording, rehearsing, basketball, vids, and herbalizing. Pure fun. Once we take possession of the place, we'll be set for good because we're buying this one instead of renting it like the Hive.

How are the new songs sounding? The new songs are a little faster. Good jumping tempos. I've got one that's kind of "What Was I Thinking" meets "Homebrew". It won't come out sounding like either of those songs, but me and P-Nut are working on developing the slap bass with muted 16th note distortion guitar vamps. Does that make any sense? It does to me. Chad has made a sick ass heavy shuffle song. It's gonna be the bizzomb. We're still working on the home video. It should be really cool. Thanks to all the people for all the love on tour. We had a blast out on the road with Incubus. Also, check out my good friend's band Grasshopper Takeover. Curt Grubb, the lead singer has been one of my best friends since first grade. Also, he was the other singer and guitarist for my first couple of bands. They played the side stage at some of our shows. Check out their site here: http://www.grasshoppertakeover.com/dates.asp

What am I listening to? Jungle. Punk. Reggae. The usual. I've got a computer disk of Beatles songs that I can't stop listening to. I put the disk into my player piano and the invisible man starts playing. It sounds way better than a recording of piano.
I also listen to Chick Korea, Gershwin, and Cole Porter that way. Pure music. No vocals or production. There is plenty of exciting music right now. I'll break it down into two groups, the funky group and the rock group.

First there are a whole bunch of great new hip hop albums I've been groovin' to. Just when you think hip hop has sadly degenerated into people bragging about Prada and Versace, newcomers will come and bring rap back to the very original and creative art form it once was. My favorites are new albums from Common, Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche, Dilated Peoples, and the Beatnuts. I have heard advance copies of albums from Black Eyed Peas and De La Soul that are off the hook.
Also look for a 311 remix of Black Eyed Peas "Empire". Our version will be a b-side on their maxi-single which will be coming out at some point. We re-did the music to the track on my bus studio then I took my bus up to Jones Beach, NY where the Peas were playing with No Doubt. The Peas re-did the vocal on the bus and we had a good time hanging out with them. Great guys and an awesome live band.

As far as rock music I'm into new albums from: The Deftones, The Urge, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot, and Refused. That's about it for now....

Peace, Nick

What Have You Records is an independant label that I started in 1990 with the release of Dammit, Unity, and Hydroponic. The label is now home to the remixed release of these albums as one "best of" cd, The Omaha Sessions. The second release by the label is Zack Hexum's debut jazz album, "Introducing Zack Hexum."
