Here we are, in the last week of December, getting ready to celebrate the coming in of a New Year. For me - that is an instant signal to grab the nearest deck and start reading! There are many wonderful spreads that can be used for the New Year.
Two of the spreads that instantly come to mind are the Astrological Spread and the 12 Month Spread. Both of these spreads use 12 cards, and both are placed in a circular pattern - the pattern of cycles and continuity.
For the Astrological Spread, the 12 positions are defined as follows: (1) the self (personality); (2) finances, self worth; (3) communications and travel; (4) home, the home environment; (5) creative expression and children; (6) health, employment; (7) partnerships (business and personal); (8) joint finances, legal issues, new beginnings; (9) higher education, religion, social issues; (10) career, how your community sees you; (11) hopes, fears; (12) subconscious, occult.* These cards form the theme for the next year, and act as a wonderful guide to the forces and issues that the Seeker will be facing, and how they may best deal with them.
For the 12 Month Spread, each position represents one of the twelve months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November or December. The theme for each month is formed by the nature of the card drawn. This is an interesting spread, as it can be read simply on a month by month basis; read in three month increments to see what each quarter of the year (or each season, as it were) is going to bring the Seeker; and read all together - as the story of the year ahead. An interesting thought here would be to journal these cards - or to print out a scan of the card, add written comments to it, and use these as dividers for a yearly journal. Comments can be added at the beginning and the end of each month, graphics can be added that show the theme of the month, affirmations can be done - there is no end to how these cards can be used!. (The comments that are added can easily be separated by using different colors of ink.)
This next spread is one of my own - I hope that you enjoy working with it. It is of a more contemplative nature, and meant to be worked with throughout the year, and not read and put away. The basis of this spread is the creation of a "blueprint" for the New Year. We will be to looking at what we are carrying over from the old year; what we need to release to promote growth within the new year; what gifts the new year has for us; what energies will challenge us and what energies will aid us in the new year.
The positions are defined as follows:
1. The energy that is carrying over from the previous year.
Before doing any Tarot reading, I advise contemplation, adjusting the physical setting (lighting candles and/or incense, placing a reading cloth where the cards will be spread, placement of crystals, playing music etc.) and forming the issue of question to be read on as precisely as one can. We get out of our readings no more and no less than we put into them.
May the New Year greet each of you with Joy and Peace. May you walk the Path of Beauty - the Middle Path, the Path of the Heart. May your Path be well lit, may the voices of the Ancient Ones be well heard.
