Kick's Story

Hi my name is Katie Cunningham (screen name kick in danceart.com) and I am a dancer. I have danced ever since I was about four with a little bit of interruptions. I first decided to start dancing because my older sister did it and anything that she did I had to do. And another reason why mom put me in dance was because my foot turned slightly inwards a little bit. I am seventeen now and I still dance and my foot is completely normal. Dance helped to straighten it out. When I first started to dance I was in ballet and gymnastics. I did a flip off of my back porch while I was at home one day playing with my sister and her friend. When I flipped off I landed on my elbow and broke it in four places. Well that was the end of dance for a few weeks. I went back to dance going strong. I kept dancing until I was seven and I quit to play softball, just like my older sister. I hated it so bad that I had to go back to dance. So as soon as it was time to sign up for dance again I was one of the first in line. Then over the course of dance I had taken ballet, jazz, tap, baton, cheer and one more year of gymnastics. During that second shot at gymnastics it was during summer programs, and instead of having a helper spot me I wanted to try the back hand spring all by myself. Big mistake. I sprained my arm and there went summer dance. As soon as the arm healed I was back in the sign up for dance. I finally became a freshman in high school and I quit dance for studio and decided that I wanted to dance for school. So I joined the dance training class that you had to have to join the dance team. The dance team is the group that perform during half time shows for high school football and have a big spring production second semester. Well in the time that I was in dance training I found the sport that I love so much besides dance which is skating. I was on an inline speed team and about a week before dance team try-outs I fell during practice and cracked my knee. There went dance team try-outs. I was so depressed but after my knee was a little better I went back to dance and back to speed team. I was in really good shape because of the two sports that I love so much working together. Well I had to do another year of dance training because I wasn’t able to try out the previous year. I danced as hard as I could all year long. I made the advance dance training class for the second semester which is a really good achievement. I kept skating at the same time though. Before try outs for the dance team I quit speed team because I didn’t want to risk the injuries and not be able to dance on the team again. Try outs came and I did my very best. The smile never left my face and I tried very hard. To my surprise I made the dance team. That summer we had summer camps and at that time we put together our routines for the half time shows for that season. Well I got to be at the top of one of our stunts. I was held up in the air in the splits. While we were practicing the stunt I was dropped I am sprained my spine and that put me out of dance for three weeks. I can back in head first and full speed. I am now on my second year of the dance team and I love it. No injures yet for this year (major ones any ways). I am back at studio and I am taking jazz and adding tap. I have never been happier. Dance is a great way to express yourself and show how you are different from everyone else. Dance has helped so much in life because it taught me the most important things: discipline and how to work with others. I never want to quit dance and I want it to stay apart of my life as long as possible. I hope you enjoyed my story.
