The Crashdown Cafe

"What is this? Am I supposed to just let you put hickeys all over me?" Maria shouted as she pulled herself off of the kitchen floor.

It was after closing at the Crashdown, and it was Maria's turn to lock up. She had been doing just that, when a strange feeling made her look out the door. There stood Michael. He was so handsome and mysterious, but also too damn moody for Maria's taste. She had no idea what was happening between them, one second they were about to rip each other limb from limb, and then the next *poof* they were stuck on each other like white on rice. One minute he's hot for her, the next he's pushing her away with that "I'm too tough to even care!" attitude that made her want to vomit.

I am completly confused. Maria thought to herself, watching him angrily drag himself off the floor.

As for Michael, things weren't as complicated as Maria was making them out to be. They were having a good time, or at least that's what it started out as. Making out and groping each other was great fun, but Michael couldn't help but feel as if he was hurting her. In some small crevice of his mind, he actually was starting to care whether or not he actually hurt Maria.

My God what am I thinking? Michael shuddered and walked over to the counter. He pulled out a cookie, and searched around for the Tabasco sauce bottle he kept stashed away in a pocket.

Maria looked at him and shook her head in disgust. "I don't know how you eat that crap!" Then she walked to he kitchen to turn off the lights.

"Time to go fish boy, move it!" She ushered him out of the door and into the street.

As she was fumbling with the keys the key-ring fell to the ground, so she bent to pick them up giving Michael a really good view of her butt.

"Nice jeans. Great fit." Michael muttered as he stared.

"Quit staring at my butt you freak!" She quickly locked the door and started walking in the direction of her car. "Why are you guys so weak? How come you can't even tell me why the hell are we doing this? I mean, look at you, and look at me! Isn't there something wrong with this picture?"

"Yeah. You're in it."

"Funny alien boy." She opened the door and got into the car, "Don't you need a ride?" She asked.

"No thanks, I'm walking. There ain't no telling what you have in that thing. Last time I was in it, you had a box with a blow-up doll."

"It was a delivery! God, why do you insist on blowing everything out of...." She was interrupted by Michael's lips as they came crashing down on hers.

"Now what were you saying?" Michael asked with a grin at her confused expression.

Growing angry again, "I hate you." She said as she started the car. "I hope you rot!" She slammed the door shut and sped off, leaving Michael in a cloud of dust.

What are we doing? Michael asked himself and then shrugged and started to walk.

The Next Day

"Maria, what's wrong?" Liz asked her voice dripping with concern for her best friend.

"Huh?" Maria mumbled. She had been picking the raisins off of her all-natural all-bran muffin, and roughly tossing them to the ground.

The quad was quickly filling with students arriving at the school. Liz and Maria, had gotten there early. It was a kind of ritual for them to get to school early, so they could talk and eat. Mainly they talked about their recent "walks through the fire," that is the endless adventures they had with Max, Michael, and Isabel. They sometimes actually talked about other things, like school and work, but this morning Maria seemed preoccupied with something. Liz was determined to get to the bottom of it.

"Earth to Maria. Maria Deluca come in please." Liz said in her best mission control voice. She waved a hand in front of her best friends face.

"Hmm? Oh sorry Liz. I was just thinking."

"'Bout what?"

"Well, okay say this guy completly pisses you off, but you are kinda crazy about him. And sometimes it even seems as if he's crazy about you too. Then sometimes he completly ignores you. What is going on? Does he like you or is he just using you?" She stared straight into Liz's eyes.

Liz thought for a second and then looked right into Maria's eyes and said, "Listen Maria, if Michael doesn't treat you right then I say forget about him. Or at least ignore him for awhile. Maybe he's just as confused as you are and if you do ignore him, he'll figure it out on his own."

"So you knew all along who I was talking about?"

"Everyone knows. I saw you two making out in the Crashdown a few weeks ago. Isabel and Max knew long before I did." A shadow briefly fell across Liz's face.

Maria noticed her friends change in emotions, "Liz I would have told you, but.."

"But what?" Max, Isabel, and Micheal strolled over to the girls.

"Oh nothing. Just talking about..." Maria held up her half eaten muffin, "muffins! You want?" She didn't ask anyone in particular.

The others just shook their heads, and sat down. Basically it was just the start of another day in Roswell.

In Class-Same Day

Maria sat trying desparatly to follow her teacher's words. Her mind kept re-playing that night at the Crashdown.

'Am I just over reacting?' Maria asked herself. She had been thoroughly enjoying herself that night. Until she began to wonder what Michael's motives were.

"Psst."

Maria jerked as a finger lightly tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around and a slip of paper was shoved into her face. She looked toward Liz, who smiled warmly back at her.

Maria opened the letter and turned around.

'Are you going to the dance?'

Maria had completly forgotten. The annual formal was coming up. Maria had planned on mentioning it to Michael, but well....things fell through.

'I don't know.' Maria wrote and passed the note back.

She turned back and tried again to get into the teacher's words. She was finally following, when the person behind her tapped her on the shoulder again.

Maria stuck her hand out, and took the note. She opened it and began reading.

'Maria, you should go. Maybe you and Michael are not together anymore. So what?! You deserve to have fun. He's the jerk. Any guy would KILL to go with you.'

Maria folded the note and gave Liz a weak smile.

'If only it was that easy.' Maria thought sadly.
