Household Uses For Essential Oils
Disinfectants= Such oils as tea tree or lavender can be used for disinfecting clothing and diapers. For washing by hand, add up to 50 drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water. In a washing machine, add the same quantity to your liquid laundry detergent. For disinfecting kitchen or bathroom surfaces, add up to 50 drops to a pail of hot water.
Mist Sprays= Fill a small house plant mister with water and then add the essntial oil. A good ratio would be 30 drops of oil to a cup of water. Shake well frequently to disperse the oil.
Lightbulb Rings= Rings made of ceramic or metal that balance atop light bulbs are available in many gift shops and shops where essential oils are sold. A few drops of the essence are placed in the ring and the scent is defused into the room.
Scented Linens & Drawer Liners= Cotton and linen can be lightly misted with a solution of about 10-15 drops of oil to a half cup of water. Lemon, Lavender, Bergamot, or Geranium are good choices. For drawers, line them with heavy paper impregnated with essential oils. 40 drops oil to 2 ounces of water. Let paper dry before using.
Scented Candles= Take a wide unscented pillar candle and light it. When the wax has melted around the wick, snuff the candle and add a few drops of essential oil to the melted wax. Relight the candle.
Potpourri= Use about 3 cups of dried plant material(flowers, buds, leaves etc...), 1 1/2 Tsp. Of Orris Root powder and 40 to 60 drops of essential oil. You can also add things like, dried fruit slices, sea shells, nuts and whole spices.
Repelling Moths= Oils useful for this are, Cedarwood, Clove, Lavender, Lemongrass, Patchouli and Rosemary. Put a bowl of wood shavings that have been doused with essential oils, on the floor of the clothes closet or wardrobe.
Carpet Freshener= Use 8 ounces of baking soda to 30-40 drops of oil, mix well. Allow oil to permeate the soda foe 24 hours. About a half an hour before vacuuming, sprinkle on your carpets.
