Chapter 2
“Hello Nick. Long time no see,” I said, standing up. After a moment of awkward silence, we embraced.
“So how have you been?” he asked sitting across from me.
“Good. Really good. You?”
He rolled his eyes. “Busy! But enough about me. How was college?”
“Great. I finally made nationals and got a Silver medal at the Olympics.”
“So I saw. Congragulations.”
“Thank You.”
“What else has been going on? Anybody special in your life?”
“Yes. 2 as a matter of fact,” I said, digging in my purse. I came up with 2 pictures. One of Tyler and one of Alex.
“Are these your children?” he asked when I handed him the pictures.
“Yeah.”
“Their beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
He looked back up at me. “Krys, are they-their mine, aren’t they.”
“Yes Nick. They are,” I said truthfully.
“I-I’m a daddy? I can’t believe this.”
“Is that good or bad?” I asked.
“Well I don’t know yet. I mean I’m in shock.”
“I know. So was I when I found out.”
He ran his hands through his hair. “I can’t believe this. Why didn’t you tell me this earlier? When were you planning on telling me? When they were 40?!” he yelled.
“Don’t be mad at me! When the hell was I supposed to tell you? When you were in Europe for 2 years? Or touring the states? Or making new records? I must’ve started 1,000 letters but where would I send them? To your fan club? You guys moved so much! I knew this was a bad idea from the beginning.” I took the pictures from his hand. “I never should have come here in the first place! Goodbye Nick! Have a nice life!”
Tears sprang to my eyes as I gave my ticket to the Valet Parking guy. I got in my car and fled out of there as fast as possible. I saw Nick standing in the doorway, stunned.
I drove around for about an hour before going home. I didn’t even notice a strange car in the driveway.
I walked in quietly knowing the kids would be sleeping.
“Krys, I’m glad your home-“ Sami started.
“I told you! What did I tell you before I left?! I had this really bad feeling! Well it was a complete disaster! He totally flipped out on me, blaming me! Well here’s a little clue Mr.Carter! It takes two to tango. I can’t believe he had the nerve to-“ I stopped when I saw Nick standing in the doorway to the Rec Room.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Sami said, grabbing her jacket. “Call me tomorrow,” she whispered on her way out.
“What the fuck do you want?” I asked, walking into the living room.
He followed me, sitting beside me on the love seat.
“Krys, please. I am really sorry for the way I acted tonight. What I said was totally out of line.”
“Damn right it was!”
“Look, I said I’m sorry. What else do you want?”
“I want you to leave.”
“Not before you hear me out.”
“I’m listening.”
“Krysten, I came tonight because I wanted to tell you something. I-I’m still in love with you. There hasn’t been a day gone by where I don’t think about you. About us-“
“Nick, there is no us. Remember, you broke up with me.”
“I know. And I was a damned fool for breaking up with you. I just wish I could go back and make everything different. Maybe if we hadn’t broken up, I wouldn’t be in this mess.”
“Look, I may have given you the wrong impression about my children. I’m not mad at you or anyone for this. I love my children dearly. And there was nothing you or anybody else could have done about that. I got pregnant and had two beautiful children. They’ve been the joys of my life and that’s the end of discussion.”
“No, it’s not the end of discussion. I’d like a second chance.”
“Second chance for what?”
“Everything. Us. My children.”
“The children thing I’ll grant. I think a father should take part responsibility for that. But I dunno about us.”
He moved closer and put his arm about me. “Please Krys?”
“Nick, you really hurt me last time. How do I know you won’t do it again?”
“You have my word.”
I sighed. “One chance. You screw up- with me or the kids- and your in deep shit!”
He held up his hand. “I promise. Can we seal it with a kiss?” he asked, hopefully.
I nodded. He stood and took my hand, bringing me up with him. His hands rested around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck and smiled. He leaned down and his soft lips brushed over mine for a soft kiss.
“Mommy? Mommy is that you?” Alex asked, coming down the stairs, rubbing the remaining sleep from her eyes.
“Yes sweetheart. What is it?” I asked, stepping away from Nick.
“I was thirsty. Can I have a glass of water? Who’s that?” she asked, pointing to Nick.
“Alex, this is your fa-my friend Nick,” I corrected.
“Pleased to meet you Alex,” Nick said, bending down and shaking her hand.
“Pleased to meet you Nick. Can you get my water for me please?” she asked me.
“Of course.”
I went into the kitchen and got her water.
When I went back into the Rec Room, she was curled up on Nick’s lap, asleep and sucking on her thumb lightly.
“Whad you do to her?” I asked, jokingly.
“Hey, don’t look at me!” Nick said in a whisper.
I put the water down. “Follow me.”
I quietly walked up the stairs and opened the door to her room. Nick gently put her down and covered her up, placing her teddy bear in her arms before kissing her on the forehead.
“Krys, she’s beautiful,” Nick said after he shut the door quietly. “And to think I created her.”
“Well, not by yourself.”
“Your right. I did have some help,” he smiled, hugging me. “And I couldn’t think of anyone better to be raising our children.”
After a couple minutes, I broke the ice. “Would you like a tour of the place?”
“Hell yeah. Speaking of which, how can you afford such high standards of living?”
“Well, you know how I always wanted to be a model?”
He nodded.
“After I went to the Olympics and stuff, I got to be kind of popular. So for about 5 months, before I got real fat, I modeled out the ear. Sports, restaurants, foods. You name it, I tried endorsing it. I basically saved all the money from modeling and put it toward the house and necessities.”
“Oh. I see. So you quit because of-“
“I never quit. I’ve just taken a leave of absence and I don’t plan on going back anytime soon.”
“Why? Seems like you made great money.”
“I did. But I just didn’t like the idea of never being home, going to all these foreign locations. I thought it would be way too much for me and the kids. I tried it and lets just say it wasn’t my favorite job of all time.”
”Apperently.”
“Alrighty. Well, that’s Alex’s room. Tyler’s room is there,” I said, pointing to the door next to Alex’s. “The rooms are connected by a bathroom.”
“They share a bathroom?” Nick asked.
“Nick, their 7. They could care less.”
“How do you know? Maybe their insides are screaming ‘I Want my own bathroom!’ “
“You are so cracked out,” I laughed. “Here’s a guest room and bathroom,” I said, pointing to the next room. “And this is the kids’ play room. It’s a mess. Always is.” I opened the door and walked in. Nick followed close behind. “Nintendos, VCR, TV, CD Player. Anything a child could possibly want or need.”
“Their not spoiled or anything are they?” Nick laughed.
“Of course not. If their homework’s not done, they cannot step foot in this room. Same if their room’s not clean or they don’t eat their dinner.”
“Yes ma’am,” Nick said obediently.
“Very funny.” I turned the light out and went back into the hallway.
“What’s up there?” Nick asked, pointing to the stairs leading to my room.
“The loft. And my room.”
“You have your own floor?”
“It’s my house isn’t it?”
“Well yeah.”
“Then aren’t I entitled to a floor of it?”
“I guess so. Can I see it?”
I sighed. “If you insist.”
I walked up the spiral staircase and flipped on the lights. His jaw dropped.
“This room is so much better than mine!” he exclaimed. “A big screen TV, 50 disc CD Player, DVD player, Computer! You could live up here. All you need is a mini refigerator!”
I laughed. “Look under the CD Player.”
He lifted up the table cloth. “A mini fridge! Hell, why do you even leave this place?”
“I like living large. What can I say?”
He plopped on my bed and picked up a picture from my night stand.
“I can’t believe you still have this,” he said shaking his head.
“Our Prom picture? Why?”
He shrugged. “I dunno. I kinda figured you’d resent me or something after we broke up.”
“I did. But that night was a very special night to me.”
“Because it was our Senior Prom?”
“Because that’s the night we made love.”
