Morwell
The town of Morwell is situated in the Latrobe Valley between Moe and Traralgon.
Pastoralists moved into the district in about 1845, three runs being taken up - Maryvale and Hazelwood lying on the eastern side of the Morwell River and Merton Rush on the western side. A small settlement named Morwell sprang up beside the bridge where the Melbourne - Sale road crossed the Morwell river. This consisted of an inn and a changing station for the coach horses.
The district was sparsely populated until the arrival of the selectors in the 1870s following cancellation of the pastoral leases.
In 1878 the Melbourne - Sale Railway line was completed, passing about 2 km south of the old Sale road. Morwell railway station was built about 3 km east of the Morwell River and a new township of Morwell was established nearby. The area in the vicinity of the old bridge on either side of the river became known as Morwell Bridge.
In 1920, the farmland in the Morwell Bridge area lying on the western side of the Morwell River was repurchased by the Crown. Construction of the Yallourn power station and township of Yallourn began in the following year and also excavation of the open cut brown coal mine.

Prior to 1878, most births in the district were registered at Traralgon, and later at either Moe or Morwell.
