The township of Trafalgar lies in the Latrobe Valley between Yarragon and Moe. Settlement in the district began in 1875 following land selections on the slopes of the Strzelecki upland south of the valley. The township was established in 1879 following completion of the Melbourne - Sale railway line. Drainage of the huge Moe - Trafalgar swamp north of the railway line was completed in 1900 and settlement spread into this area. The offices of the Shire of Narracan were situated at Trafalgar from 1908 to the 1990s. This site also includes the localities of Sunny (about 2 km west of Trafalgar), Trafalgar South and Trafalgar East.
