"HMS HERCULES"
The Hercules, Arrived Sept 1853 Adelaide Confirmed HIES ship.
The Hercules that brought HIES emigrants to Australia was built in 1815 and sold in Hong Kong in 1865. It was converted from a 74 gun 3rd rate warship of about 1750 tons to an emigrant carrier in 1852, specifically for the HIES.*The "Hercules" was laid up in Cork after smallpox broke out on board, and about half the passengers were off loaded and came through on other boats. It is thought it was the "Caroline" and another was the "Bankers Daughter".
The HMS Hercules sailed from Campbeltown, Scotland on the 26th December, 1852 and arrived in Cork Ireland which was then called Queenstown, on 20 January, 1853.
When it left Campbeltown it had 756 emigrants on board, when it sailed from Cork on the 14th April 1853 it had 380 emigrants on board. 17 had returned home, 56 had died and the other 305 were provided with passages on the following ships. No in brackets is the no of people x Hercules. It must be understood that many descendants of these people have no knowledge of the Hercules connection.
