The information shown in blue is only a guestimate at this point to help determine the size of ship and how crowded the conditions.....it is not known however how many crew required to run the ships would be added to these lists although many of the 1749 voyage were discharged or retired mariners.....These voyages took between 70 to 120 days to cross the Atlantic. The majority of these vessels were equipped with the newly invented ventilation system with improved air quality below deck.
The approx. dimensions were established using a formula for determining tonnage at this time period - and using a 30 ft. and 24 ft. beam as a standard.
I am hoping that this table will help figure out the types of ships used and I would appreciate any help in filling in the blanks....so if you have any information please e-mail bryanfkeddy@ns.sympatico.caNotes submitted from Winthop Bell Notes in RED.
Ships chartered by John Dick [JD] which alloted approx. 9 sq. ft. per passenger -
(a 6 ft. x 6 ft. raised platform bed for each 4 adults with storage space underneath).
