The Cave

The episode begins on a hot day inside Sakura's room. Kero is sitting on her desk as the heatwaves fill the room. He doesn't seem to be too pleased at the current time. "This is really lame; Sakura's on a field trip to the beach and I'M not . . .oh, it's not fair . . . " Kero breathed in deeply, then began thrashing around adn he continued to complain. "I DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS! IT'S NOT FAIR!"
In the next room, Tori and Julian were studying when they suddenly heard a thud against the wall. "Hey Tori, did you just hear something?" "I don't know . . ." "Well, maybe I've been studying too hard eh?" Julian smiled, then the two returned to their homework.
At the beach, Sakura had just dove under the surface, and was now swimming around admiring the ocean beauty. She resurfaced to get some air, when she looked toward a large cave near the cliffs. "That cave gives me the creeps. Li!" She looked again to see Li standing at the edge of the cave, staring into it. He suddenly turned around when he heard his named being called. After noticing Sakura, he dove back into the water and began swimming away from the shore. "Wonder what he could be doing out here?" "Sakura!"
Sakura suddenly turned around to look toward the shoreline, where she hears Rita calling out to her. "We're gonna practice some beach volleyball moves; you wanna come?" "I'm coming!" Sakura then dove down, then resuraced and began swimming back steadily. On the beach, Rita, Chelsea, Nikki, and Madison watched and admired her abilities. "She is such a strong swimmer. That's so cool!" "But if Mr. Terrada saw her out that far by herself she'd be in trouble." "She could probably swim better than HE can!" Everyone laughed as Sakura ran up to them ready for a game of volleyball.
The game was underway as they hit the beach ball and and forth between each other, but when Sakura went for it, it got away from her. She went off to get it as it floated on the water, but just as she was about to pick it up, Zazhary emerged from the waves and scared her. He smiled as he held the volleyball in his hands. "Say, I bet you didn't know volleyball was originally played in Hawaii with coconuts?" "Are you serious?" "Yes ma'am! But coconuts are hard and heavy right?" "Yeah . . ." Zachary then frowned and leaned in, placing a hand to the side of his face. "That's why they banned it in Hawaii. People were getting badly injured." "OH REALLY!? "He's making it up."
Sakura suddenly turned to Chelsea who had her arms crossed and as well an annoyed look on her face. Sakura simply smiled to cover up the deception. "Yeah, I knew that!" "I think Zachary's going to be a science fiction writer when he grows up."
The group then looked onto the water to see Li swimming in the ocean. Madison commented that Li was just about as good as Sakura was. She simply smiled. "Yeah, ALMOST." "You know, eskimos invented swimming..." "E-nough!" Chelsea grabed Zachary, then began dragging him off to another part of the beach as Mr. Terrada called all of the students over for a special task. "It's a good thing Zachary and Chelsea are cousins." And during the entire time he's being dragged, Zachary is still continuing his story.
Later, everyone had been assembled into two teams, each holding a rope. Madison turned to the others and smiled. "So still think our Enviromental Studies field trip is boring?" "Absolutly not." Madison then looked down to see Sakura rubbing her hands with sand. "What a pro!" Sakura then rose from the ground and gripped the rope. "Does that make your grip better or something?" Sakura nodded just as Mr. Terrada gave the signal to pul. Both groups pulled as hard as they could until Mr. Terrada blew the whistle. The groups looked at their completion with pride, as Mr. Terra announced that the fish which they had just caught would be their dinner. Later, the food was cooking and everyone was doing their share. The girls commented on Sakura's skills with potato peeling, when they suddenly looked over to see Li speed chopping vegetables. "Looks like Li won that round Sakura." "Hey, I'm just peeling potatoe's here!"
Later that night, all five of the girls were nestled into their bunks inside the one of the cabins, discusing the events for the next day. The shrine walk came into the conversation, then Nikki leaned over the side of her bunk and looked down at everyone. "They say the cave's are haunted . . ." Nikki then proceeded to tell a ghost story, which Madison asked was one of Zachary's stories, about a group of students who did exactly what they were doing the next night, only they disappeared after going into the shrine. Sakura just laid there, becoming more and more terrified as the story continued. Just as she was about to continue the story, Mr. Terrada opened the door and scared everyone, especially Sakura. He asked what was going on. "We were just talking about the shrine walk tomorrow. You scared us when you opened the door." Mr. Terrada apoligized then told them to go to sleep. He then left the cabin as everyone got into bed.
Time passed, and everyone was asleep, except Sakura who was still scared from Nikki's story. "It's no use. I just can't go to sleep." she then got out of bed and headed down the stairs outside toward Mr. Terrada's cabin. "I think I'll just talk to Mr. Terrada. Tell him I'm spooked about ghosts, and I don't want to go in the cave tomorrow. It's no big deal; afterall, everyone's afraid of something, aren't they?" As she stopped, she suddenly felt a hand rest itself on her shoulder. she turned around, then calmed down when she saw it was only Li.
On the beach, the two sat on the sand and stared out at the ocean and the cave, when Sakura finally decided to try and start a conversation. "That was you out at the cave today, right Li?" He nodded, acting calmer and nicer than before. "Yeah, I thought I sensed something." "A Clow Card?" "Nah." "You don't mean a g-g--g---" "What are you trying to say? Ghost?" Sakura nodded as Li looked toward her. He then frowned and closed his eyes. "Boy, some cardcaptor YOU are. Don't tell me you're afraid of going inside that cave tomorrow?" "No, I--well, I--" Li then commented on how pathetic he thought she was, then suddenly looked back toward the cave when he saw a flash of blue light emitting from inside. "I just saw something!" "Very funny Li. Let's change the subject." "That's fine with me." She then asked about if he liked Reidenton, and who he was staying with. He said he thought it was okay, and that he was living with one of his mother's cousin's named Wei. "Does he know?" There was a pause before Li looked back over to Sakura. "What, about the Clow Cards?" "Well yeah." "Clow Reed's our ancestor; the cards are important to us." "Yeah, they're important to me too." "Listen, I don't need your help, Sakura." "And I don't really need your help either." He just looked ni shock, then rose from the ground to stand up. "Uh, i'm going back." He then started back to the cabin, which caused Sakura to quickly leap up and follow him. "Hey! Wait for me!"
The next morning, Sakura and Madison were washing up by the basins in the area."So what are you gonna leave behind at the shrine on the walk tonight, Sakura?" "To tell you the truth . . ." She wiped her face with a towel, then looked up at her best friend with a smile. "I was wondering...if maybe we can leave LI there." Madison laughed at her comment along with Sakura. Later, the two were relaxing in the shade, under trees further way. Sakura sat up and looked toward the cave, when she suddenly saw a flash of blue light. She rubbed her eyes and blinked twice, wondering if she really saw anything.
That night, the class gathered outside of the cave and listened to the instructions of one of the teachers there. She explained a little bit about the cave's history, then gave them instructions on what to do. "You'll go in groups of two and three, with a few seconds in between. You'll use candles instead of flashlights to get a good feel of what it was like for the people who walked the shrine path a long time ago. It's the same path coming and going so it's impossible to get lost in there. We want you to use all of your senses, not just your eyes." Sakura stood there with Madison, becoming extremely scared. "This is turning out to be like Nikki's story . . ." The teacher then started sending groups in, and later when Nikki, Rita, and Chelsea went in, hoping it would be scary, Sakura suddenly tried to make up an excuse to get out of the walk. "Oh no, I forgot my gift . . ." "It's okay Sakura. I brought a couple of extra stones so you can have one of mine." Sakura groaned with disapointment, then was suddenly dragged in when she and Madison were sent in. Li watched themgo inside with a serious look on his face.       "Zachary's stories sure are eh?" "Yeah." The two suddenly stopped when they arrived to the bridge, wondering why there were no lights from their classmates up ahead. "NIKKI! NIKKI!" "That was Chelsea!" Sakura and Madison then ran down the bridge, finally seeing the other side where Chelsea and Rita were standing, totally terrified. "Are you guys okay?" "No we're not! Nikki's disappeared!" "What do you mean she's 'disappeared'?" "Well, she was just standing here, and then she seemed to just vanish! Right Rita?" Chelsea turned to Rita, who was sobbing from fright, and just then she disappeared right before their eyes. "Rita, no!" Chelsea turned to the others, more terrified than before. "You see that? That's exactly the same thing that happened to Nikki as to Ri--" Right before she was able to finish, Chelsea suddenly vanished right in fornt of Sakura and Madison's very eyes! "You were right Sakura!" "I'm right? You mean to tell me that there are really ghosts in here, Madison!?!" "Li was sure that there was no Clow card in here, right?" "Uh-huh . . ." The two then ran off across the bridge to try and warn the rest of their class, when Sakura stopped and turned around. to her shock, she found that Madison had disappeared as well. "Madison's vanished. There's no one left . . ." The candle Madison was carrying fell onto the bridge, and set it on fire.
Li ran through the cave until he found Sakura watching the bridge burn to nothing. Sakura..." She suddenly turned around to face him, her eyes filling with tears. "Li! Madison, and the others---" "They disappeared." "Uh-huh . . ." "It's the same with my group; everybody's vanished." "I don't like this Li; if it's not a Clow card, then it's gotta be a--" "Get a grip! There's no such things as ghosts!" Sakura's eyes were closed as she concentrated on something. She then gasped as she realized something, then opened her eyes and looked to him. "Li, have you got your Lasin board?" "Uh-huh." "Hurry!" As the fire's started burning down to nothing, Li held out his board and chanted the incantation. "Source of light with ancient spin, send forth the power within. Force, know my plight; release the light!" As he finished, a blue light shot out across the water, and stopped at the small shrine on the other side. "Over there?" "Yeah. We've got to get across the water, Sakura." "Is the board always right?" Li became annoyed as the light disappeared from his board. "You're still worried about ghosts, aren't you? Boy, have you got a card for this or not?" "Yeah, I do."
She held a card between her two fingers, and when it was in front of her face, she turned it so the image, which was an air balloon, was facing away from her. She then tossed it out then began twirling her wand like a baton. "Float Card . . .transport us to the other side!" After twirling it a little more, she brought it up with both hands and then when the card came around to be in front of her, she brought the wand down to slam the tip against the card. "Float! Release and dispel!" A pink energy emitted from the card and swirled around, causing a sphere to appear around both of them. They then floated up into the air and started across the water. As they went across, Li began to comment about their powers. "I admit that maybe you DO have some speical powers, but there's a lot more to being a cardcaptor. And it doesn't mean that your powers are stronger than mine, okay?" She nodded as they landed on the other side.
After Sakura called back the card, Li closed his eyes . . . "Okay it's all yours . . ." . . .then suddenly started becoming transparent himself! "No, you can't!" Li became puzzled until he looked down at his hand, which was becomnig more and more transparent with every passing minute. "Not you too, Li!" "Listen, master your fear! Before we all vanish...and never come back!" Sakura became frozen with fear, as she didn't know what to do right then. "We're running out of time!" "Okay!" she then gripped the wand and closed her eyes, trying to locate the source of whatever was causing everyone to disappear. She then opened her eyes as she stopped at the small shrine. Running forward, she grabbed and opened the small doors, causing a strang energy to float out. She knew what to do, so she raised her wand above her head. "Clow card! Return to your power confined!" She then slammed the wand down, creating a burst of energy in the shape of a card. The cloud of power swirled around then into the square, forming a card which floated into her hand. "The Erase Card . . ." Li walked over, and Sakura turned around and held up the card, allowing Li to see the image with the light from his candle. "So that's why everyone vanished!" "Take it." She smiled and held out the card to him, leaving Li a bit surprised. "Huh?" You should have it Li. As much as I hate to admit it, if you hadn't been here, I wouldn't captured it." "I can get my own cards. I don't need YOU." He closed his eyes and turned away, leaving Sakura a bit confused. "Is that so?" Li suddenly walked back with a strange look on his face. "What?" "I need to cross the water." "Oh, right!" Sakura smiled and rubbed the back of her head with the hand holding the card.
The next day, everyone was on the beach. "What a disappointment." "I really wanted to be scared and absolutely nothing happened." "It's almost as if it didn't even happen." Madison turned to Sakura, then leaned in to whisper into her ear. "Sakura, it was a Clow card, wasn't it?" She nodded, then looked down the beach to see Li standing by himself, staring out onto the water. She walked over to him, then stopped and looked out onto the ocean as well. "No one remembers anything at all Li, and I don't know what to say to them." "They don't want to remember because they can't understand it." "I see . . .you know I'm not trying to compete with you or anything." "Well that's good, because there's nothing you could beat me at."
Before Sakura was able to respond, she heard the others call out to both of them about a game of volleyball. Sakura smiled and waved to them, while Li remained where he was. "I'm coming!" As she rushed over, Zachary began yet another one of his tall tales. "Did you know that beach volleyball was used by the ancient Egyptians as a way to determine who would be next inline for the throne?" "Zachary . . ." Sakura suddenly stopped in her tracks, while Li's ear twitched suddenly. Chelsea gripped the ball as she spoke to Zachary. "Don't make me hurt you."
Suddenly, Sakura and Li raced by, grabbing the ball from Chelsea. they began hitting it back anf forth, trying to prove that one was better than the other. The others simply watched. "I think we should sit this one out." "You're right about that."

Comments

This was a very neat episode, and to quote in the words of the owner of "Powers Confined-A Li & Sakura Site, "This is what you call a 'seasonal blend'! A summer like episode on the beach with an autumn Halloween story." Li's staring to be nicer to Sakura, and at the end, admits (sort of) that he may need Sakura's help after all with the cards (seeing as all he's got is Time). We finally find out officially that Sakura is afraid of ghosts (they hinted it in "Power's Ploy"). Not much else to say, other than it was a good episode. One more note, even though Li's starting to be nicer, he still gives her a hard time in some parts.
