Deep Space Nine is the strategic command post of Starfleet at the mouth of a stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. It is defended in part by the assignment of the USS Defiant.
This AMT kit was built mostly straight out of the box, with a few notable modifications.
Beyond what was in the kit itself, 80 additional pieces of plastic were added to enhance the accuracy of the model.
The Defiant is a one-piece resin kit. The deflector area was corrected and a needle was embedded within it so it could be pushed into the docking port of the station model. The aft portion was re-sculpted since that is where the resin was poured into the mold and most of that detail was missing in the kit.
The main reactor at the bottom of the central core was enhanced with putty detail and rods made from straightened paper clips.
Small clear styrene spheres were added at the base of each of the main pylons as the floodlights on the actual station miniature.
The basecoat for the station was Neutral Gray. Detail panels were painted Camouflage Gray, and Light and Dark Ghost Grays. Sensor details were painted Armor Sand, and the pylon sensors were additionally treated with a wash of
Testors
Rust.
All
18 docking ports received major upgrades. They were either
replaced or enhanced with sheet styrene to more closely
approximate the look of the actual DS9 station.
After all the detail panels were painted, pencil and ruler
detail lines were marked all over the station.
