The
Rancor is my favorite piece to date. He was built from the
vinyl kit as an experiment. I'd never done a vinyl kit
before and Wal-Mart had this one on for $5, so I figured it
would be no great loss if I wrecked it.
My Rancor won a Silver at the 2001 Maritime Modeler's Meet in
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The kit was built as per instructions, but some of the pieces,
the shoulder joints in particular, were warped in the box. The vinyl had to be softened with a hair dryer in order to get
the pieces to fit flush. Two people and lots of bad words
were needed to get the left arm into place. Putty only
needed to be applied in a few places. Happily, the rough
texture of the skin gave me an excuse not to do too much
sanding.

The
model was painted various shades of custom-mixed browns and tans from the Gunze
Sangyo line. An off-white mixture was mixed to paint the
claws, nails, and teeth. Future Floor Wax was applied to
his mouth, nostrils, and eyes to give a shiny/drooling
effect. For the drool in the mouth, the model was laid
down, and Future Floor Wax poured into it's mouth. Then
the model was stood up, and the wax allowed to pour out,
creating a realistic effect.
The shoulder and spinal areas were done in darker shades to
indicate a change in skin texture from the tougher hide to bony armor.
The manacle was painted a rusty red color, then dry brushed with
silver to give a tarnished effect. The eyes are Gloss
Black. Flat Black was painted inside the nostrils and ears
to give an illusion of depth.
I looked at pictures of the Rancor studio model, and real-life
lizards to get an idea of how skin texturing and coloring should
appear.

The
Gamorrean Guard (or Rancor Munchie) was base coated in a medium
green color from Gunze Sangyo, and then the details were painted in by hand.
The horns and teeth were painted in a yellowish off-white
(similar to the Rancor teeth and claws).
The tunic was
painted a medium brown, and the fur and loincloth a light
brown. The fur was then dry brushed with the tunic color
to give it depth.
The wrist and shoulder guards, and the
headpiece were painted Flat Black and dry brushed with Silver to
give a worn appearance to the metal.
The eyes are Gloss
Yellow with a Flat Black iris. The sandals are also Flat
Black.
