I had a vitrectomy in April, l996 along with the gas bubble insertion and "lay flat on your stomach for ten days" regimen to close a macular hole caused by my vitreous tearing a hole in the macula. To me, this is the danger of "doing nothing" when your vitreous has gotten thick and clumpy for whatever reason. However, Doctors "do nothing" until you get a hole. The surgery was quite easy, taking about two hours. I was thrilled to find this discussion going on, because the vitreous in my other eye is obviously pullling and I have the most colorful and interesting stuff going on in my eye all the time. Looking at my white counter tops - I see lights, spots, cobwebs, black spots and vision is getting worse daily. I thought of asking my surgeon to remove the vitreous from my only remaining, seeing eye, as the macular hole ruined the central vision in the operated-on eye. Now I read that will probably be an impossibilty and I will end up getting a tear and ruining my only remaining vision!! I could not believe the response I got from at least three physicians.....this had been going on for about two years before the vitreous finally tore a hole by pulling on the macula...it was just wait!! I no longer can drive and I have my computer cranked up to large print and "get by". So...if you've been told this is not a serious condition.. that's not true!! Let's hope they develop a cure.. If anyone wants to talk about this further, email... I feel like "misery loves company" today..I haven't even been able to get a physician to really care about what I was experiencing...I guess they see so much of it, it's boring to them. I kept thinking to myself..I wonder how excited you'd be if it was your career going down the tube because of this condition!!!
