Timeline As Per Cinema

Also Known As Trying To Piece Together Logan's Past Using the X-Men Trilogy & X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Last updated: 12 Jun 2009

SPOILER ALERT - If you have NOT seen the X-Men movies and would prefer to watch them without prior knowledge, do not read any further.

Big-budget cinema storytelling on Wolverine. It began with X-Men and has now spanned four films, the latest of which was focused mainly on Logan's past. Here is where I'm going to do what I can to put events into some sort of order after waiting until the initial large theatre run of the last movie began to leave the opening sets of theatres. The sequence of events may not be exact, but I've put them into the order that would make the most sense, story-wise. Note-worthy people in his life are in gold font. Facts that can be assumed from the movies will be unmarked. Facts shown in the movies will be followed by one of the following codes: XOW (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) - XMN (X-Men) - XMU (X2: X-Men United) - XLS (X-Men: The Last Stand).

Please note for sanity's sake that this is Movie-verse Logan only, not any alternate world including the animated features or comics.

SPOILER ALERT - Final warning - If you have NOT seen the X-Men movies and would prefer to watch them without prior knowledge, do not read any further.

Pre-1845

Birth of Victor 'Dog' Logan. Father: Thomas Logan - Mother: Unidentified

Thomas Logan starts to work for John Howlett at his estate in the Northwestern Territories.

Affair begins between Thomas Logan and Elizabeth Howlett.

Approximately 4-5 years after Victor's birth, James Howlett is born to the household of John Howlett and his wife, Elizabeth. His biological father is, however, Thomas Logan.

1845

Hard to tell due James being a sickly child, but at this point, estimating his age at somewhere between 8-13 years old. I favor the estimate of 9 years old as that is the normal beginning of puberty in most males and the sickness seems likely to be due to his mutancy awakening. Especially due to his remark that Victor had also been sickly when he was that same age. Victor has gone past that initial stage and is already exhibiting his claws. His own age, I would estimate at around 13-15, already starting to show some adult signs, but with growing and filling out left to do. Going in favor with the age of 14, making him the elder by five years.

Death of John Howlett at the hands of Thomas Logan - gunshot wound. [XOW]

Death of Thomas Logan at the hands of James Howlett. First eruption/use of bone claws. [XOW]

Victor and James leave the area as the sound of the gunshot starts drawing others to the house. [XOW]

1846 - 1860

Blank area in the movie, though considering he was the older and tougher of the pair, I have to assume that Victor was the one that kept the pair of them fed and safe while James (called Jimmy by Victor) grew up.

1861 - 1865

Jimmy is around 25 and Victor around 30 at the beginning of the American Civil War. The two of them are now soldier fighting for the Union and are, at this point, obviously already seasoned fighters. They stick close by one another during battle and watch one another's back, going back-to-back when faced with multiple opponents. Jimmy seems to favor making use of his weapon, but Victor goes between his gun and his claws regularly. [XOW]

1866 - 1913

Another blank period in the movie, but during that timeframe, easy to see how a pair of brothers with good fighting skills could earn their living with them.

This would be the timeframe where it would have to become obvious to both men that something is very different about them as they will age chronologically by nearly 50 years but change physically very little.

1914 - 1918

Jimmy would be about 78 years old at the beginning of World War I and Victor around 83. They are still soldiers but other than type of uniform and style of weapons though, very little has changed for the pair. Jimmy still sticks mainly to his weapons while Victor tends to make equal use of his claws. [XOW]

1919 - 1938

Blank area. As with earlier, only apparent thing for this timeframe is that the brothers stick together and likely work as either mercenaries or as soldiers in other conflicts. Again, likely no shortage of available work for a pair of skilled fighters.

1939 - 1945

As World War II dawns, Jimmy and Victor are closing in on the century mark (at ages 93 and 98, respectively). As in earlier conflicts, the brothers manage to stick together.

In 1944 in Poland, Erik Lehnsherr (age approximately 14-16) shows his first signs of mutancy at a concentration camp. [XMN]

Jimmy and Victor are both part of the Normandy beach landing of 1944. Again, Jimmy mainly sticks with his rifle, but Victor is showing more tendancy to make fuller use of his feral side, both in his style of movement and weapon of choice, though he still wields a rifle very well. [XOW]

1946 - 1958

Blank area. Wouldn't be hard to imagine that they spent at least part of that time in Korea.

1959 - 1965?

We now come to the place where exact dates are going to get even vaguer. Jimmy and Victor are in yet another war zone, this time Vietnam. The differences in the two brothers is being more pronounced now with Jimmy trying to keep Victor from going too feral. Sometime after 1962, Victor is stopped from taking a woman by an officer and he kills the man. Though he tried to stop Victor from killing, once the other soldiers started moving in on his brother, Jimmy moves automatically to the back-to-back position with Victor, popping his bone claws - which ends up getting them sentenced to the same firing squad. [XOW]

While being detained in chains/shackles after the firing squad fails to kill them, Jimmy and Victor get a visit from an Army officer, William Stryker, who offers them a chance to get out of prison and join a special team he's putting together of other special talents (read mutants). They accept, Victor seeming far more taken with the idea than Jimmy. [XOW]

1973?

The brothers each have well over a hundred years of fighting experience under their belts (their ages now being around 127 and 132 respectively). Jimmy and Victor are now members of Team X, a covert strike team led by Stryker. Other members are Wade Wilson (swords), Zero (guns), Fred Dukes (immovable), John Wraith (teleporter) and Bradley (control of electrical devices - possibly technopathy). How long the team has been together is uncertain, but definately long enough for all of them to be aware of one another's powers as well as time for some of them to have gotten on one another's nerves.

Team X travels to Lagos, Nigeria on a mission whose purpose is known only to Stryker - tracking the location of a meteorite. The brutal methods ordered for getting the information push Jimmy over the edge and he breaks from the team. Victor is obviously not happy with the situation, but stays with Team X instead of leaving with Jimmy. [XOW] Personal observation: the character interaction in the movie would seem to indicate that Stryker had taken the position of an approving father figure to Victor - something Victor apparently never got from his drunken father considering how he said his father had deserved to die back when Jimmy first killed him. When it began is unknown, but Victor starts going by Victor Creed instead of his birth name.

1979?

Six years have passed since Jimmy left Team X. Quite a few things have changed. Possibly to seperate himself further from the team, he drops the use of his birth name and instead starts to use the name of his biological father. Jimmy starts using Logan as sort of a combination first/last name.

Logan is in Canada, living with an elementary school teacher named Kayla Silverfox and working as a lumberjack. [XOW]

Stryker and Zero come to the area where Logan's group is logging. Logan is informed of the deaths of two of the other members of Team X and that someone seems to be after them. He turns down Stryker's call to rejoin him. [XOW]

Kayla tells Logan a story about the moon and her lover, Kuakuoku the wolverine, who are seperated forever by the Trickster. [XOW]

Again at work, Logan scents blood and finds the remains of an animal underneath a tree scored with claw marks that he recognizes as Victor's. Running, he finds their car abandoned with claw marks through the car's hood. Nearby, he finds Kayla's blood-covered body. [XOW]

Leaving Kayla's body, Logan goes hunting for Victor. The two fight ending with Logan being knocked out. [XOW]

Logan reawakens in the hospital where Stryker has been waiting for him to wake up. He reminds Logan that Victor can't be taken down by him as he currently is and offers to give him the weapons he needs to deal with Victor. Logan agrees and leaves with Stryker. [XOW]

Logan arrives at the Alkali Lake facility and is told that the meteorite that Team X had been sent to find had been located and used form a metal compound called adamantium. The theory is that a mutant with a healing factor will be able to survive a process to bond the metal to their skeleton but since that same healing factor would prevent the mutant from remaining sedated through the procedure, the subject would need to submit voluntarily.

He consents and has new tags made with the name Wolverine, taken from the story Kayla had told him. The adamantium is bonded to Logan's skeleton. The process nearly kills him, but once Stryker is sure that Logan has survived, he orders them to wipe Logan's memory. Stryker hasn't taken into account Logan's enhanced hearing and he breaks free of the adamantium device, fighting his way out of the facility and escaping. [XOW]

Logan is discovered in a barn by the owners, the Hudsons, who provide him with food and clothing. [XOW]

Zero tracks Logan to the farm, killing the Hudsons. Logan escapes - Zero apparently killed. [XOW]

In search of clues for where to find an island he heard Stryker and Zero talk about, Logan heads to Las Vegas where he meets up with Wraith and Dukes. From Dukes, Logan learns that Victor is still working for Stryker - and realizes that Stryker played him to get him to agree to the adamantium experiment. Dukes puts Logan onto the trail of Remy LeBeau aka Gambit as someone that knows where the island is as he escaped from it. [XOW]

Wraith heads out with Logan to New Orleans. Remy spots Logan's Team X dogtags and mistakenly believes he's still with Stryker, leading to a fight. In the meantime, Wraith spots Victor outside leading to another fight. Logan finally manages to convince Remy that they both have the same enemies. [XOW]

Remy takes Logan in his plane to Stryker's mutant holding facility - located on Three Mile Island. Logan goes in solo, confronting Stryker, who is watching as doctors/scientists work on Weapon XI, sort of a custom made mutant patchworked together from the DNA of various other mutants. [XOW]

While Victor watches unseen from behind the scenes, Stryker throws Logan off his mission by revealing that Victor didn't kill Kayla - noone did. He has Kayla give Logan the details of her faked death and also taunts Logan with Kayla being a mutant with tactile telepathy/hypnosis as her power (ie: she can implant suggestions/orders to those she is in physical contact with) and implying that everything Logan thought he'd felt for her had been a manipulation. [XOW]

As Logan walks away, Victor comes out and confronts Stryker, who informs Victor that, despite promises, he will not be given the adamantium himself. Excuse is given that Victor would not survive the procedure, but Victor rejects that and breaks from Stryker. Kayla makes the mistake of drawing Victor's attention to her and her scream after Victor grabs her draws Logan back. [XOW]

Logan and Victor fight, ending with Victor being knocked out. Kayla comes after Logan, telling him Stryker was lying about her using her abilites on him and giving the reason of her working for Stryker as being because he has her younger sister in the penning area for mutants - as with Victor, Stryker also went back on his word to her and didn't release her sister. [XOW]

Logan has Kayla lead him to the penning area and wholesale breaks open all of the containment areas (holding Emma Frost and Scott Summers among other young mutants). [XOW]

Seeing what Logan and Kayla are doing in the pens, Stryker orders the scientists to activate Weapon XI even though he isn't completed. When the escaping mutants are intercepted by Weapon XI, Logan remains to fight, sending Kayla off with the freed mutants to find another way out. [XOW]

Fight begins with Weapon XI, going badly for Logan until Victor joins in the fight. The brothers automatically fall back into their pattern of backing each other's moves and managed to take Weapon XI down, but the fight weakened the structure they were fighting on. Victor leaps off and escapes. Logan waits a little too long to jump and is saved from being buried by the timely arrival of Gambit. [XOW]

Logan tells Gambit about the group of young mutants trying to escape the island and asks him to try and find/help them out. Logan finds Kayla, who was wounded during the escape attempt and starts off with her to try and find help. The two are spotted by Stryker, who shoots Logan in the back and then in the head. Stryker then moves to finish off Kayla as well, but makes the mistake of getting close enough for her to touch him. She sends him away before apparently dying from her wounds. [XOW]

As Logan is recovering from being shot, Gambit comes back to inform him that the others made it off the island, stopping in his tracks as he sees the head wound closing over on Logan. It quickly becomes obvious that Logan doesn't recognize him, but Gambit manages to convince him that they are on the same side and need to leave quickly. They come across Kayla's body, which Logan stops at, but he doesn't remember her either. In the end, he decides to leave on his own and he and Gambit part company as the authorities begin to swarm the island. [XOW]

1984?

Birth of Marie aka Rogue in Mississippi.
