In 2009, Marvel tried to pin Logan down to a timeline in a direct edition they called Wolverine Saga. It's still on the vague side, but here is a barebones brief on the official version to help folks piece together the main happenings in Logan's life. Note-worthy occurances relating to Wolverine are in gold text. Note-worthy people in his life are in green font.
Please note for sanity's sake that this is mainstream Logan only, not any alternate world including the Movie-verse.
James Howlett is born to the household of John Howlett and his wife, Elizabeth. In the comic-verse, James' paternity is not clear.
James grows up a sickly child in the company of Rose (a red-haired Irish orphan brought into the household as a companion for him, approximately 4 years older than James though this is a guess) and 'Dog' Logan (son of the gameskeeper for the Howlett estate, Thomas Logan. Dog is assumed by many to be the one to grow up to be Sabretooth, but this is not currently confirmed in the comic-verse).
Death of John Howlett at the hands of Thomas Logan.
Death of Thomas Logan at the hands of James Howlett. First eruption/use of bone claws, drawing attention of the being known as Romulus.
Death of Elizabeth Howlett - suicide.
Rose and James leave the area. James starts using name of Logan.
Logan gains the nickname of Wolverine due to his short, scrappy nature.
Death of Rose - accidental impalement on Logan's claws.
Logan goes to live with a wolf pack in the Northwestern wilds for undetermined amount of time.

In 1915, Logan is in Belgium fighting Lazaer aka Azreal, Angel of Death.

1942 finds Logan not only in Poland, but imprisoned in the Sobibor Death Camp.
He was on the loose and around Berline in 1943 with a new lover, Catharina, a resistance fighter. Their relationship ended when she betrayed him for her family's sake.
The next spot he resurfaces briefly is in Arnhem Land, Australia.
A questionable part of his history follows as he seems to be the only one that remembers it (which may mean it was another memory implant especially as the actions are wholely out of character for him). At any rate, it occurs at an internment camp in Newell, California where following experimentation on some of the prisoners by Romulus' scientists, he killed both the prisoners and personnel.
Winter of 1943 finds Logan back with military forces in Europe with both a stint in Italy and a roaming assignment teaching combat techniques to resistance fighters including some in Greece.

In the same year, he travels to Cuba where he meets Jimmy Woo and his G-Men aka Agents of Atlas. Together, they disrupt an infestation of mind-controlling insects.

Sometime around 1961, Logan joins the Weapon X project, becoming a member of Team X. Team X travels to Cuba in 1963 and is betrayed to the enemy soldiers by Silver Fox who becomes a part of Hydra.

Logan teams up with a young, up-and-coming spy named Carol Danvers to investigate - the trail leading to the Hellfire Club and their security force, Sabretooth. Both Logan and Danvers survive, but Logan is fired from Department K not long following that mission.
It has now been a few years since Logan walked out on Team X and the Weapon X project has changed, the scientists in charge now looking at mutants as objects, not employees as in the past. Logan is himself in a bad spot after being fired from Department K, basically drinking and staying to himself. This unfortunately plays into the Project's plans as Logan is brutally abducted by Weapon X without anyone even being aware that he is missing.
Logan is subjected to countless experiments that come close to destroying his mind. These experiments culminate in the painful bonding of adamantium to his bones.
Near-mindless, Logan is outfitted with a helmet that is supposed to allow his 'handlers' to control his actions. They send him to the small town of Roanoke and use him to slaughter every inhabitant. Plans went awry though as control failed - possibly due to Logan's healing factor fighting back against the control device's effects. Going into a beserk fury, he turns on the handlers and kills not only them, but nearly everyone else at the facility before escaping in the wilds of the Canadian Rockies. From this point, he goes with Wolverine as his primary name with Logan being known by very close friends.

Wolverine heads back to Madripoor to visit Seraph and is introduced to Viper, a mercenary who is her newest protege. The three went on a mission together that went south fast when Sabretooth comes in.
