They've known each other for a long time. Carol Danvers - Ace to Logan - has been in and out of his life since she was plain Carol Danvers. He was there when she became Binary - he tried to warn her when he saw signs of her becoming an alcoholic. In one alternate timeline, he even married her. The woman he treats like an old buddy who just also happens to be an occasional lover.
