chapter 8

To attack the men didn’t seem like a good idea. All of them were largely built and definitely well trained. It wasn’t that they couldn’t handle them; it was just that they couldn’t afford the attention or the chance that one of them might get away.

26 glanced over the dark figures What is it with these people ! They are in broad daylight and they think wearing dark cloths will help them get away? She pushed the thought away. “Recon they’ll give in once we pop out in front of them?”

”Um…to be honest I think you’ve spent too much time in the sun…” 73 whispered.

”Then what the hell do you plan?”

“I didn’t say it was a bad idea….I just think that we need plan B. I mean they aren’t likely to give in to two girls who are just 5”7”!”

“This is so sad and unimaginative…”

“I have a plan.” She announced . Her face was as blank as ever and 26 wondered if she herself looked like that . Suddenly 73’s hand slipped and one of the men looked almost directly at them.

26 was about to kill the girl, but then decided that it was probably more civilized to listen to what the girl had to say first, before she hung her off the Harbor bridge. “Ok what’s your idea.”

“We sneak out get the car, then we drive straight at them when they’re making the deal.”

“It sounds good…..” 26 admitted, “But what would be plan B in this case?”

73 pulled her gun out, checked the ammos and her lips curved up slightly. “Then we do it the easy way.”

“There is definitely something wrong with you, so when we get back I want you to go and see the psychiatrist.” 26 said sickened.

“Well I dunno about you but I plan to make it to 20. I wouldn’t mind being the last 82 to die either”

26 snorted, “Well good luck! You know how many people you’re gonna have to out live?”

“Only 3 left.” 73 replied shortly.

“that’s impossible!’ 26 snapped then looked around nervously. In a lower voice she continued, “you know how many of us there were? 287. –.”

“Well two actually….” 73 interrupted, “ I didn’t account for your buddy 33.”

”There they are.” 26 said noticing the figures moving worriedly.

73 gave them only a moment of study before shaking her head, “ The D blockers could handle this….” There was a strange edge to her voice and her accent made it stand out. “I don’t understand what we’re doing here….”

26 ignored her, “Get ready , they’re almost in.”

The figures had just walked into the building before the car was moving. 26 was about to close her eyes. The car was going so damn fast it would be impossible to stop…

The car jerked to a stop, two men standing on either side and looking shocked.

The two girls jumped out of the car quickly but the men all fled. They each took off after a party.

Pulling out her gun, 73 fired at a large man who was behind every one else. She shot him in the knee making him immobile. Two men jumped in front of her as she turned a corner, but 73 shot them , running past them as she did so. She couldn’t see the three men ahead but she could hear them running, almost sensing where they had stepped. There was the sound of someone slipping and then a few painful curses. 73 smiled inwardly, one of them had hurt himself. She didn’t stop running; she simply shot the man in the ankle and continued to follow the others.

73 could no longer here the other drug dealers ahead of her. She expertly jumped up on top of several boxes, until she had some view of a small part of the ware house.

The two remaining targets weren’t too far away. She jumped from the box she was on, on to two other boxes. She landed on the 3rd just as the two men were running past. She flung her self onto them. Landing on the man carrying the case and shooting the other in the chest. She twisted the man’s hands behind his back and forced him up to his feet. She kicked the other man to make sure he was dead. She dragged the man away, ignoring his yells.

26 straightened as she saw 73 approaching, dragging a man twice her own size. She handed him over to the police officers who had arrived.

” You seem to like making a mess.” 26 said nodding towards the ambulances.

“It was the only way.” The girl said absently. “How did your chase go?”

26 snorted. “They all tripped over something and when I got to them they were just lying there like dying cockroaches.” She opened the car’s door “Let’s go. I don’t want those C blockers lazing about too much.”

It was 8.00am and the two girls were standing patiently at the bus stop. They were lost in a crowd of men and women in suits all waiting for their bus.

“Okay before we get on the bus,” 26 said as she noticed their bus waiting at the lights, “You can’t throw the year sevens out of the window and you can’t order the teachers about either.”

73 raised a confused eyebrow which disappeared as the bus stopped in front of them. 73’s eyes widened with what should have been fright. The students on the bus were so loud they could be heard where she was standing. “26….”

“Don’t worry , just remember.

The girl in front of 73 dipped her bus pass into the green machine and it came out beeping. The bus driver gave the small girl a weighing look and let her pass. 73 wondered if anything outside the SI followed the rules. She dipped her own pass in and grabbed the nearest pole. The bus was short of tearing open, and she didn’t want to go flying. The bus had hardly begun moving when the driver suddenly hit the breaks hard.

The bus jerked to a stop. Immediately , 26 grabbed one of the poles and balanced . 73 didn’t have the same amount of luck, with the girl next to her knocking into her hard .The sudden movement sent 73 flying, and unluckily she landed against a nail, which was unattractively sticking out of one of the seats. The sound of ripping material followed.
