Chapter Five

“Are you sure you’re okay Rach?” Matty asked with concern. She nodded, holding the tissue to her bleeding head. They were still parked at the side of the road while Josh cooled off. “Well I’ll just go and talk to Josh then.” She watched as he walked a little farther down the road, then turned to Nick.

“How are you doing?” she asked.

“Okay…” They sat in silence, both waiting for the other to speak. “Is this ever gonna end?” Nick asked finally.

“I don’t know Nick, but I hope so.” She leant back against the seat, “I don’t think I can take much more.”

“They why don’t you stop it?” Nick said, leaning forward slightly, though his hands were still tied.

“How?” Rachel turned to look at him, then after checking that Josh and Matty weren’t looking, leant closer to Nick. She gently kissed him, leaving the feeling of her warm lips on his even after she pulled away.

“Take the keys,” Nick said, recovering from the kiss.

“What?” Rachel brushed her dark hair away from her face and looked at Nick.

“The keys. Josh left them. Pass them here and I’ll hide them,” Nick encouraged as she finally leant forward and took the keys out of the ignition.

“What good will it do?” To Nick it seemed like she had given up hope. Her face displayed confusion. No happiness, no laughter. But then again it displayed no sadness either.

“I don’t know,” Nick laughed at himself. “All I know is it will do something. Whether it’ll be good or not…” he trailed off, “Shit, they’re coming.” Matty climbed into the drivers seat.

“You got the keys man?”

“No. I thought I left ‘em in here,” Josh replied, placing the gun in Nick’s side.

“Well they’re not here now.”

“They’ve gotta be,” Josh protested.

“Well they’re not,” Matty responded, feeling a little frustrated.

“Rach?” Josh said, beginning to suspect.

“What?” she replied, continuing to stare blankly out of the window.

“Give us the keys,” he demanded. Rachel didn’t answer, but Nick noticed her tense up. “Don’t make me have to come and get them,” Josh warned. Just as he went to speak again the faint sound of sirens could be heard. “Shit,” Josh exclaimed as they all scrambled out of the car.
