Chapter Nine

Nick whistled under his breath as I opened the door.

“Laney you look great.” He complemented, holding out his hand to me. I took it and followed him to his car. He looked incredibly handsome. He had gelled his hair back and was wearing smart trousers and a green shirt. It took a while but we finally arrived at the restaurant which was situated by the beach.

“Oh, this is beautiful,” I said, looking out at the ocean from the balcony (you know what I mean) of the restaurant.

“Did you know your eyes sparkle when you’re excited?” Nick said, looking at me intently. I smiled and took a sip of my drink.

“So, how is everything… with the group?” I asked, trying to change the subject.

“Well we’re about to record a single, but we’re gonna release it in Europe… not here yet.” Nick answered happily.

“So you are going to be on the other side of the world!” I said triumphantly.

“Yeah,” he sighed, “Okay, okay, you win. You were right.” I laughed,

“I am SO jealous now. You’re going to Europe!” Suddenly Nick turned serious,

“I couldn’t have done this without you Laney.” I smiled,

“Of course you could’ve. Nick you’re the one with the talent!”

“Team work.” Nick stated.

I stared out at the night sky. Nick was lent against the railing with his back to the ocean.

“There’s this smell,” I said suddenly, “that you can only smell at night. It’s so fresh and new. It’s like it’s only just come into existence… and the night holds it, so it can’t seep into the day.” Nick looked at me, then placed his hand over mine which was resting on the railing.

“Laney, I’m glad I could give you your second chance.” I was surprised by his sincere and caring tone.

“I’m glad I could be here for you. I just wish it’d been the same with Ryan.” Nick squeezed my hand.

“I’m sure he knows…” I smiled,

“We had this link… this bond, I guess like Aaron and Angel. We knew everything the other was feeling. I knew something was wrong ‘cos suddenly I got this empty feeling.” I pushed the few strands of hair that had blown in my eyes away from my face, “I still haven’t filled it… that empty space.”

“I honestly don’t know what to say. I’ve never lost anyone close to me… but if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here.”

“Thanks.” He pulled me close and carefully pushed my hair behind my ears. He tilted my head so I was looking into his sparkling blue eyes. Tentatively he lowered his lips to mine and gently kissed me. A slow, lingering kiss. I took his hand as we pulled apart. “Come on. I think you better take me home.”
