Chapter Fourteen

Breaking up is hard to do.

I inhaled deeply. I was sitting in Nick's living room waiting for him to get back from Orlando. Angel had said he wouldn't be long, so now I was becoming more and more nervous. Finally I heard keys in the door and Angel say I was in the lounge.

"Hey," Nick said, entering the room grinning. Damn - this going to be hard!

"Nick, we need to talk." I said. I watched the smile fade from his face.

"What's wrong?" he asked. I stood up so he was no longer towering over me so much.

"Me. I can't see you anymore. I can't be with you as more than friends." He stared at me.

"Is this what you really want?" he asked, taking my face in his hands.

"Yes" No! He tilted my head up and kissed me.

"Are you sure?" He asked, kissing me again before I could answer.

"Nick. Stop!" I said, trying to push him away.

"Ella, this isn't right. You're only saying this because of what happened at the club."

"Exactly. Nick you did that to deliberately hurt me... and you succeeded." I said, feeling tears form in my eyes.

"I'm sorry," he said, taking my hands, "you have no idea how sorry I am. I was just, I don't know... angry, jealous.."

"Jealous?" I was confused, "Why? We weren't going out. It was one kiss, and we'd only been on one date."

"I don't know Ella," Nick said, beginning to get frustrated, "you just get me so confused."

"I should leave." I picked up my bag.

"No, wait." Nick protested, "we should talk about this, maybe we could work something out."

"No Nick, this if for the best."

"Is it?"

"Yes." No! "I have to go. I still want us to be friends." He sunk down on to the sofa and sat in silence. "Bye Nick." I left, knowing that if Nick stopped me again I wouldn't be able to leave him. Luckily, or unluckily, I still wasn't sure which, he let me go.

Kerry and AJ were mucking about out front when I got back. I decided, as the worst was over with, it was time for Step 2.

"Hey guys," I said, smiling, "how about we have a party or something?" Kerry looked at me surprised,

"Well you've cheered up."

"Yep," I answered, "so do you reckon your parents would let you?"

"I don't know. I could say it's to make you feel better. That should work."

"Cool."

"You and Nick sorted stuff out then?" AJ grinned.

"Yeah," I said, trying to sound happy, but Kerry caught the look on my face.

"You finally did it?"

"Ohhh, you did it!" AJ said, cheekily.

"Not that 'it'" Kerry said seriously.

"Yeah, so come on, let's organise a party!"

Kerry's parents agreed to the party, so we set about organising things for the next day. Kerry kept looking at me, to see I was okay. I assured her I was fine and that breaking up was what I wanted, but she didn't seem convinced. We had invited everyone and Kerry was surprised when I insisted that she invited Nick.

"Kerry, I don't hate him." I explained, "just 'cos I don't want to date him, doesn't mean I don't want to be his friend." It was true, infact, if I was being honest I still wanted to date Nick.... it was just too difficult.
