6. "The systematic use of the scientific problem-solving method
for decision making"(Watson, 1979). The problem-solving method is
foundational to the practice of nursing.
7. "The promotion of interpersonal teaching-learning"(Watson, 1979).
The provision of information empowers a client to make informed
decisions about health and healing.
8. "The provision for supportive, protective, and(or)
corrective mental, physical, sociocultural, and spiritual
environment"(Watson, 1979). This factor encompasses internal and
external variables that the nurse is responsible for guiding.
9. "Assistance with the gratification of human needs"(Watson, 1979).
Human needs include all acts of life, ranging from food to the need
for achievement.
10. "The allowance for existential-phenomenological forces"
(Watson, 1979). The nurse needs to view each person's reality through
the individual's eyes.
Dr. Jean Watson published a new book this year, "Postmodern Nursing and Beyond"(1999).
She stated:"time and again during my career I have found that my concerns about nursing and the sacred caring-healing
practices and transitions are not mine alone, they are the concerns and passion of nurses and
women all over the world who share in this awakening of the human consciousness" (1999, p.5). Her
book explores the necessity for the continuation of caring-healing practices so that nursing can continue to
thrive as a profession that involves both humanistic values and scientific knowledge.
