The Science of Nursing

Ways of Knowing
The Science of Nursing is a continuously evolving process of inquiry. Nurses rely on intuition ~ the lived experience; practical knowledge such as evidence-based practice; influence of other disciplines~ i.e. pathology, physiology, pharmacology, sociology, psychology, biology, chemistry, etc.; Conceptual models (discussed on next page);and informatics.

What is informatics and what does it have to do with nursing?

Informatics is the use of computer based technology in nursing. It is the ability to access information and communicate using a variety of computer based sources. In order for nurses to receive information quickly, access international data, receive distance education, or work in computer oriented facilities, informatics teaching needs to take place.

Computers and technology cannot take the place of quality nursing care. This technology can, however, save time and allow the user to access a vast amount of information.
