Fleming
named most travelled cricketer
From NZPA, 14 January 2003
Stephen Fleming has again scooped the airpoints
award as the world's most travelled cricketer.
The New Zealand captain was named by the Wisden
cricket website as the man who covered the most distance last year
-- an impressive 122,802 miles.
He headed off teammate Nathan Astle, who clocked
up 98,432 miles, just ahead of third-placed West Indies batsman
Chris Gayle, whose tally was boosted by a tour to England with the
West Indies A side.
Fleming's total included tours to Australia,
Sharjah, Pakistan and West Indies as well as two return trips to
London for the International Cricket Council (ICC) captains' meeting
and the festival match for a World 11 in Cardiff.
His New Zealand team were also the most travelled
unit, with 75,670 miles compared to the West Indies' 75,286.
They were well clear of third-placed England,
whose tour to New Zealand boosted their tally to 56,615.
Fleming also topped the airpoints list the
last time Wisden calculated it in 1998, when he recorded a comparatively
tame 75,286 miles.
His jet-setting this year will include the
World Cup in South Africa and tours to Sri Lanka in April and India
in October.
