Silvia Parts Supply
. . . . .

Can you still get parts for a Silvia ?  Sure you can !  Not everything though. Mechanically she's just a Fairlady 1600, and I've never found a mechanical part I can't get for a Fairlady. (or any other 1960s Datsun for that matter) Body and trim parts are another story but a good coach builder can make any panel on the car. I had new door skins, sills and a new boot lid made for my car, and it wasn't that expensive. No dearer than a new panel would have cost if it was available. Lots of other bits are shared with other Nissan products. No matter what, you should be in a car club, they can help with many parts and give you some advice on what to do. There are details about car clubs for Silvias on the Silvia Register page.

But my local Nissan dealer says you can't get any parts for Early Nissan/Datsun cars anymore !   What he's really saying is either:-
A/  The oldest thing he's seen is a Pulsar and he doesn't know what you're
       talking about.
B/  It involves a bit of extra work to track down old parts and he's too lazy
to get off his bum and do some work.
C/  He would rather sell you a new 200SX, so he'll lie to you.
D/  It's not on his microfiche therefore it doesn't exist.
E/  All of the above.
In any case, don't believe him if he says no without looking. As a general rule, if it's amechanical part there's a good chance he CAN get it, and if it's something else he probably can't get it but HE SHOULD TRY.
Some Nissan dealers are sympathetic to your cause (your car club will know of one) and will try to help, but it's not easy for them, so don't get too upset with them. For a start he won't have a parts catalog for a Silvia and he may not have any access to one. They did make one, it's Nissan publication number is C-026, if he can't find any part numbers you can e-mail me and I'll send the numbers to you. I have a copy of the parts catalog and I'm happy to help you out. If it's a mechanical part, get him to look in the SP311 catalog, he'll have access to that. If he gets a part number and he checks it on his price list and it says it's been deleted or is no longer available, make sure he checks the number on his "Obsolete parts list microfiche". He has one but he may not know it. I've had to show several parts guys where to look for one in their box of fiche. In the 1970s Nissan changed a lot of their parts numbers and allocated new numbers. The obsolete parts list shows the old number and then gives the new number. If you find a good parts guy, even if he's 100 kilometers away, it's worthwile to make the trip because there's not too many decent, understanding ones out there.
Another thing to remember when buying anything from a Nissan dealer, when you order a part ask them for the "trade price" for the part. This is about 20% less than retail, it's the price they charge mechanics for the part. (The mechanic then charges you the retail price and keeps the 20% for himself.) Just tell them you are with an Early Datsun car club and your club usually gets trade discount at Nissan dealers. If they say no, just go to another dealer, there's plenty of them out there. I've never had them say no.

Parts From Other Cars That
. . . . .
Will Interchange
Mechanically the Silvia is nearly identical to the Datsun Fairlady 1600 (SP311) . The SP311's engine, gearbox, brakes, tailshaft, suspension and steering can be used on the Silvia. There are only a few mechanical differences between the SP311 and the Silvia. The diff centres are different, the SP311 has a 3.889-1 ratio instead of the Silvia's 4.111-1 ratio, though the 4.111 ratio was an option on the SP311, and the 3.889-1 ratio was an (uncommon) option on the Silvia. The SP311's radiator has different brackets on it's sides, but these can be modified to fit. The expansion tanks look the same but they have different mounting brackets. The Silvia's alloy tappet cover says "Nissan", the SP311's says "Datsun", both are interchangable though. Both steering wheels are the same size, but the Fairlady wheel is plastic. The hand brake lever is slightly different in appearance but both will work. The Silvia's air filter assembly is fully enclosed with an intake tube facing the front of the car, the SP311's is an open sided assembly. The SP311 air filter assembly will fit, but it doesn't muffle out the induction noise as well as the original. The Silvia uses the SP311's chassis, there are a few minor changes to some of the body mounting points and new bumper bar brackets have been added to the front and rear of the chassis. Other parts that can be used from the SP311 are the indicator assembly, toggle switches, reversing light, horns, horn relay, fuse box, inside door handles, door strikers, ash tray and trim, gauge regulator, washer system, dashboard indicator arrows, odometer reset, rheostat, ignition switch, centre console lid and lock, bonnet release cable and mechanism, pedals, speedometer, fuel and water gauges and clock. The tachometer is the same but doesn't have the "ign" and "oil" lights. The window winders will fit but they have slightly different knobs. The fuel tanks are the same except for the filler pipe location, The SP311's enters at the top of the tank, the Silvia's enters on the right side of the tank.
This is a list of other parts that are interchangable with other Nissan/Datsun cars.
Engine - The T641 Homer truck, The RL411 Bluebird SSS and some early forklifts use the R series engine, but may have different camshaft grinds, smaller intake and exhaust ports, smaller valves and have a lower compression ratio.
Tappet cover - The G31 Cedric from 1965 (1965 only) has the alloy tappet cover with the "Nissan" script.
Flywheel - The H series engine from the 31 Cedric, the 40 Junior and the 141 Caball have the same flywheel.
Carburetor - The RL411 Bluebird SSS, 130 Super 6 and Special 6 and the SP310 Fairlady use the same carburetor, but may have a different size needles. The SP310 has a different choke linkage.
Fuel pump - The 411 Bluebird has the same pump but the spacer is a different size.
Water pump - The H20 engine's pump will fit but some after market pumps have a different bottom bolt hole that may need modifying. There is a cheap after market pump now available that has an impeller that is made from pressed steel instead of cast metal. The impeller looks like the alternator fan. These are a very poor quality pump, I have had problems with one and I know of others who have also had problems.
Fuse box - The box from the 310, 311 and 312 Bluebird and the 320 ute will fit.
Indicator assembly - From the 410 and 411 Bluebird.
Speedometer cable - From the 410 Bluebird.
Windscreen wiper motor - From the 311 and 312 Bluebird.
Inside rear view mirror - From the WP410 Bluebird.
Indicator/park light lens under front bumper - Is the same as the US only PL410 Bluebird.
Side tear-drop indicators - The Japanese market Fairladys and some high screen US market Fairladys use the same indicator.
Gearbox - The RL411 Bluebird SSS has the same gearbox except the RL411 has a shorter extension at the rear of the box and a shorter out put shaft. To use it you would have to use parts from the original Silvia box.
Hand brake system - Several components from the 311 and 312 Bluebird and SP310 and SP311 Fairlady will fit.
Differential - The RL411 Bluebird SSS also has a 4.111-1 ratio diff.
Front end and steering - The 311 and 312 Bluebird have the same steering system. The upper wishbones are the same but the lower ones on the 312 have different mounting positions for the sway bar, they can be modified. The 311/312 Bluebird steering boxes will fit but they have a slightly smaller diameter shaft through the centre of the box, the Bluebird box is still a pretty robust little unit and I doubt you would ever break one. The steering box worms are indentical, so a Bluebird worm can be fitted to a Silvia box.
Front disc brake calipers - The 130 Super 6 and Special 6, some of the R411 Bluebird SSS models, the second generation Toyota Crown (circa 1966) and the Toyota 2000GT (good luck finding one of those in a wrecking yard) use the same calipers.
Brake hoses - From the 311, 312 and 410 Bluebird.
Outer door handles - From the 410 and 411 Bluebird and the 520 ute.
Complete lock set - The 410 and 411 Bluebird use the same lock set, they also have the same fuel filler flap lock.
Front bumber bar - It's far from being an identical bumper, but the Mazda 1500 can be modified to fit. This involves cutting the bar in the centre and rewelding it. It doesn't look perfect, but it's better than nothing.
Boot latch - From the 410 and 411 Bluebird.
Door latch striker - From the 410 and 411 Bluebird.
Inner door handle and window winder - Some 410 and 411 Bluebirds are the same.
