HOW TO TEST THE NERVE

I. Olfactory

Sense of smell

Smell coffee, tobacco, soap

II. Optic

Sense of vision

Snellen eye chart,

Reading newspaper

III. Oculomotor

Pupil constriction to light

Raising of eyelids

Check pupil constriction

Open & close eyelids

IV. Trochlear

Downward & Inward eye movement

Look up, down, out

6 cardinal fields

V. Trigeminal

Motor

Chewing

Jaw movement from side to side

Open & close jaw, chew, move jaw from side to side

Sensory

Face & neck sensations

Check face with safety pin, cotton ball, hot/cold water

VI. Abducens

Lateral eye movement

6 cardinal fields

VII. Facial

Motor

Facial muscle movements,

Facial expression, tear and saliva secretion

Raise eyebrows, frown, smile, show teeth, puff out cheek & whistle

Sensory

Taste on anterior 2/3 of tongue

Sugar and salt

VIII. Acoustic

(Vestibulocochlear)

Hearing, balance, and equilibrium

Whisper a word, Identify ticking watch, walk a straight line

IX. Glossopharyngeal

Motor

Throat movement and swallowing

Say "ah", Swallow, Elicit gag response

Sensory

Taste on posterior third of the tongue

Sugar and salt

X. Vagus

Swallowing and speaking

Swallow, speak, cough, and gag reflex

XI. Spinal Accessory

Movement of shoulder muscles
