Day 4 (7 Jan 99) Odometer 110828 kms. Got underway again at about 0900 (EST). The sun only comes up at this time of day this far up north. Made it to Cochrane, Ontario (223 kms). Slow going but roads are clear and the sun is shining. Very few passing lanes and lots of transport trucks. After paying for the gas the car would not start - PANIC !! Opened up the trunk and took out one of the bottles of gas line antifreeze I had purchased before leaving Nova Scotia. Assumed that there would be moisture (condensation) in the gas tank. I was correct and after a half hour wait the car started again (PHEW!) and I was underway again. Drove to Hearst, Ontario (221 kms) and gassed up but did not shut the engine off this time. Not taking anymore chances. There is alot of barren highway for the next 2 1/2 hours, next town is Long Lac, Ontario (215 kms). Stopped there for fuel, only another three hours or so to Thunder Bay, what the hell, GO FOR IT! Two hours later I have arrived in Nipigon (196 kms), it is dark and I am dog-tired. Better stop for the night. The inn keeper says it is supposed to go down to -40 Celcius through the night. (Not Again !?!)... |
