The history of UFO sightings in Canada

by Will MacDonald

Throughout the last century there have been many cases of UFO sightings. It wasn’t until around 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico where the first documented UFO sighting occurred. Soon after this the number of UFO sightings reported each year went towards the stars. Though most UFO sightings are fakes just made up for attention or for a gag there still is a massive amount of UFO sightings that are still under investigation. Most sightings are proven to be weather balloons or an odd-shaped airplane. Though throughout the history of UFO sightings most of these "UFO’s" turn out to be nothing more than weather balloons or airplanes. It’s hard to believe that there aren’t alien life forms out there in the universe. So if there is "alien" life why wouldn’t they take a vacation to the best country in the galaxy… Canada.

One of the first "documented" sighting of a UFO in Canada that anyone could find happened in the 1930’s. Two brothers were traveling down Hunker Road, which is just south of Dawson city when they saw a cigar shaped object skimming and following the hill line. It was matching every hill contour and flying very fast (Yukon Report). Unfortunately the two brothers` story never got the press until 10 years after they died, leaving of course no room for questioning them. Now did they actually see a UFO? Who knows, but in 1996 during the summer a cigar shaped UFO was spotted on that exact same road skimming over the hills. The UFO sighting from 1996 is still under investigation, which means it is unexplained.

In Canada there are on average 489 UFO/alien sightings per year (UFO BC), most of which happen in British Columbia and the Yukon. This brings up the northern lights and the possibility that the northern lights could be an attraction for Alien life forms or even a reason behind people falsifying these UFO sightings. It’s hard to tell but usually people see lights in the sky and start freaking out.

In 1897 on the 14th of August in British Columbia, a newspaper report appeared in the Vancouver Daily World. Under the title "Have you seen the light in the heavens? if not you are not up to date."

This UFO sighting was seen by more than one person making it more believable than most. For a week in total this UFO was seen over Vancouver island and it was described like follows "It approached with great swiftness, paused in midair, then surrounded itself with flashes of colour and moved towards the northeast" (UFO BC). Others described it as "it had a dull lustre and small particles of fire would shoot from the great glowing mass" It was also described again as cigar shaped. This UFO sighting could easily be explained as a meteor except for the stopping and flashing of colors. It’s hard to tell if this was actually a UFO sighting or just a group of undereducated people, who knows… do you? So in general these UFO’s are flaming saucers, which spin or hover then disappear, leaving a huge tracer. So even before the media could use photos of UFO’s they were reported as being the stereotypical cigar/saucer shape.

The first photo of a UFO in Canada was supposedly taken in 1937. The following photo was taken of the Vancouver city hall.

Now it’s up to you to whether or not, you want to believe this photo is real or fake or even just a camera mess up. The UFO in this photo looks to be more spherical in shape rather then anything. Is it a fake picture? That’s for you to decide.

In that same year a similar UFO was sighted over Vancouver Island once again. It was described as follows "Suddenly in the distance, perhaps three or four hundred yards away he spotted a whitish-bluish sphere hovering over the water. It was about 6 to 7 feet in diameter he figures. The object appeared to be following him and at one point was within a hundred feet of him. He could clearly see it had a defined edge and that it was composed of a variety of blue tones." (UFO BC). The fisherman who saw this flying sphere thought of it to be St.Elmo’s fire which is a blue-violet or sometimes greenish glow often seen at the top of ship's masts during thunderstorm conditions. It is different from lightning in that it is a continuous electrical discharge into the atmosphere from long metal objects, which causes the air to ionize and glow. St.Elmo’s fire could possibly be explained as the cause for some of these UFO sightings at night. Where the person sees a glowing orb just floats in the air. But in the day they may be able to see a tall metal flagpole or even antenna that could have caused the glow. However instead of investigating now people just take a picture and call it a paranormal experience. So was it St.Elmo’s fire the old fisherman seen that night… or was it another ship’s mast?

The first sighting of a UFO by a pilot in Canada was in 1952. The pilot soon after finishing his flight wrote to the Canadian army stating "These objects were approximately three thousand feet above sea level and remained in vision for approximately four seconds." These objects were "disk like" (Yukon Report) in shape. Now was this an alien craft seen in the skies? As the first governmental file I’ve come across that doesn’t have an explanation on what it was following the report you make the call.

In 1947 in the USA there was the most famous of all UFO happenings ever when a UFO supposedly crashed. However the government was the first on hand and at first claimed it to be a flying saucer but later told the media that it was just a weather balloon. When the saucer first crashed there were "alien bodies" found however these alien bodies quickly got turned into "crash dummies" that were being used in parachute experiments. This would not however explain how the flying object was moving at around 400 km/hour before it crashed. It also wouldn’t explain why witnesses called it "glowing saucers". (Alberta UFO study group & Roswell daily record) Now because of conspiracy theorists and just hearsay the bodies of these aliens are kept in Area 51, which is the most heavily guarded base in the United States besides Fort Knox. After this UFO crash people have been coming forward with their UFO sightings more and more. What happened in Roswell is still a mystery today but it’s your choice weather to believe that there was aliens found that night or if the government told to truth for once.

Every year from 1950-1980 the number of UFO sightings per year kept growing. In 1980 the number of sightings sort of leveled off at around 489 year in Canada. In the 1970’s drugs like LSD and Marijuana became popular. (Canadian Mythos and Conspiracies) This led to more of these sightings being fake or completely a hallucination. In the 1980’s a lot of groups started to come out of the woodwork. Like NUFOR or MUFON. NASA soon after assigned a group of people to tell whether these photos are legit or fake. Most of them come back fake or misunderstood. However some come back with no evidence proving it not to be a UFO. It’s hard to say that there is for sure Alien life out there and their visiting us but it’s becoming more and more evident that there is.

The first ever documented sighting of a UFO in the Maritimes occurred in 1947 a day after the Roswell crash. A man in PEI saw a UFO and promptly reported it to the Military. The military’s document included "e following report of an unidentified flying object was brought to the attention of the Commanding Officer of RCAF stn Summerside by the Summerside Detachment of the R.C.M.P. And confirmed by the Summerside reporter for the Charlottetown Guardian." So not only was it spotted it was confirmed and we continue with the report. "saw an object at approximately 10,000 ft east of his position moving southward at a high speed. The time was approximately 17:45 hrs AST 3 Jul 47. It maintained level flight for some distance then apparently dived earthward leaving a trail (apparently a vapor trail)", "The object was round shaped", "t was moving southward and there was such a brilliant reflection from it that its shape was indiscernible" Now not only was this case documented but it was also confirmed and not covered up. The document is from a military archive and is totally legit (Ledger). Or is it???

In conclusion is these life that we don’t know about? It’s mathematically impossible for there to be no life on any other planet. It has been proven that there once was life on Mars (UFO alert). However the life on Mars was no a big monster but little cells witch are the building blocks of life. Many people have seen these flying saucers and not all of these sightings have been proven wrong. Now is it possible for there to be life on another planet that’s more intelligent the humans? If there is why would they come visit us? What makes us so interesting?
