Jan.1 friday Wind N,very cold.5 below zero.first ice in strait. schr. went through in ice A.M. P.M.schr."Fire Fly "of St.Johns came in and anchored. schr."S.E.Cove "came from Bayfield. a schr ran ashore at McPherson,s at Bear Island, name "Break of Day",capt.Ross. schr."Duke of York".capt.Pierce,of St.johns went adrift,no rudder or anchor.

Jan.2 saturday Wind N.W.,mild, no water to be seen for ice. mails could not cross. P.M. went up to Forrestall's,good sleighing. 6 P.M. commenced snowing from S.E.,heavy snowfall. Brig"Hildi" of Cheticamp lost and all hands.

Jan.3 sunday Wind N.W., drifting snow,very cold. schr."FireFly" went adrift out of Port Mulgrave. James Crittenden died with smallpox.

Jan.4 monday Wind N.W.,fine and clear, strait full of ice. James Crittenden, William Power, William Reeves, James Stewart and this house(David Murray jr.) quarantined. some snow at night.

Jan.5 tuesday Wind N.W., A.M., fine and clear. 3 ferry boats crossed and scow and 2 horses. Dr.Carritt came to see if smallpox is here or not. arrived, gave medicine for that ailment. report John Crittenden was sick.

Jan.6 wednesday Wind N.W. very cold, strait full of ice. John Crittenden not sick, the fear of smallpox not so much today.

Jan.7 thursday Wind N. very calm, fine day. first skating for the season. no sickness so far about the house. P.M. wind changed to S.E. and snow.

Jan.8 friday Wind S.E. and drifting snow. 1 P.M. wind changed to N.W. and drifting. cold . ferry boat could not cross. William Reeves came to house after dark, Mrs.Reeves and young daughter sick(with smallpox).

Jan.9 saturday Wind S., very mild.roads had to be shoveled, heavy drifts. no sickness. no mails today. C.B. ferry boat crossed 4 times. up to sundown very mild. commenced to snow from S.E. and drift.

Jan.10 sunday Wind W. very cold and windy. strait full of ice.P.M. commenced to get colder . this night the coldest for the year.

Jan.11 monday Wind N.W.,very cold and windy. this being 10 days of quarantine, no signs of sickness. Board of Health gave permisssion to visit Mrs.Reeves. this night very cold.

Jan.12 tuesday Wind N.W.,very cold. strait full of ice. saturdays mail went today to Sand Point. Jepe Anderson (Jesse Anderson was a Justice of the Peace,nicknamed "Jepe") came up to keep Customs House open for me.

Jan.13 wednesday Wind N.W.,fine and cold. last night very cold.P.M. today mild, appearance of a change of weather. snow commenced about 12 P.M.

Jan.22 friday Wind N., fine and warm. 2 P.M. changed to S. good skating. snowed about 4 inches. Jepe Anderson went home this evening.
