This is the diary of 1876, kept by David Murray jr. , Customs Collector at Port Mulgrave. This diary logs the account of the Schooners Neva and Katie sailing from the port of Port Mulgrave for Gloucester, Massachusets just hours apart . The Neva sailed on saturday, while the Katie under the command of Captain James Forrestall, of Auld’s Cove, and the crew, and the passengers whom mostly hailed from the local area, sailed on Sunday, never be seen or heard from again. There is an old tale that I recall a teacher relating to us in history class, of a poor elderly lady going down to the wharf ,and seeking passage on this ship to visit a relative in Gloucester , and being refused such, as she didn’t have enough money to cover her passage to Gloucester, and so out of spite to the Captain , she cursed the said ship, claiming the ship would leave port okay, but never return, and whether or not she did , the ship foundered, supposedly in a gale two days later, taking Captain, and crew and all passengers to a watery grave. The Neva returned to Port Mulgrave and made many more successful voyages . An account of the loss of the Katie reprinted from an old newspaper clipping, and a list of crew and passengers is found on this site.
