5/7 RAR 'Oddities'

Here are a couple of Vehicles unique to 5/7 RAR. Both were designed to fill the short fall in self-propelled Anti-Armour capabilities and their design, although not original, was the result of the hard work of members of the unit. Unfortunatly both of these weapon systems have since been withdrawn from service.

106mm Recoilless Rifle Carrier

Designed by members of Anti-Armour platoon this vehicle was designed to enable the 106mm RR to keep up with APC mounted troops. Up until its introdution this weapon was mounted on a short wheel base Landrover and suffered from a low cross country speed.

The vehicle mounted the 106mm on a modified mount on the right of the turret, with a travel lock fitted behind the engine grill. Modifications were also made to the cargo hatch to allow the crew to stand next to the weapon. The weapon could not fire on the move.

Milan Carrier

Designed by a member of the units Technical Support Company, this vehicle mounted a Milan Anti-Tank Missile launcher in a modified Mortar Carrier. The hydrolic post was operated by the driver and was raised/lowered in the same manner as the ramp.

Unfortunatly the milan was taken out of service due to running costs shortly after this vehicle entered the Battalion.
