An Essay on The Martian Chronicles by Amanda Meek
In Ray Bradbury's novel, The Martian Chronicles , he discusses the elements of time. He discusses how time is meaningless, how important it is, and how it can overlap. His concepts will be discussed with points from the novel to support the thesis. Ray Bradbury discusses in his novel, The Martian Chronicles, the elements of time.
In the chapter called "Night Meeting," the date is August in the year 2002. There is a man who is driving along a highway on Mars. The planet is beginning to be settled now and all of the Martians have died because of Chicken Pox. This man, named Thomas Gomez, drives along and feels as if he can see time, feel time, and smell time. But he did not know what time smelled like. He put his hand out the window to touch time. He thought it was odd. He felt as if he were the only on the planet at that moment. So he stopped at one of the ancient Martian towns that hadn't been inhabited for centuries. He sat and had a cup of coffee. He heard a sound from the ancient highway and he saw a strange machine that looked like a praying mantis. Atop the machine was a Martian. He waved hello as he came closer. At first they did not understand each other, as they spoke different languages, but the Martian's telepathy helped him to learn English instantly. So they chatted for awhile and then went to shake hands. But they went through each other. They tried again and it did the same. So they stopped attempting that. They wondered why they couldn't touch. The Martian told Thomas about the party he was going to, and he pointed in the direction that he was going in. Thomas looked and he saw only ruins that had been uninhabited for centuries. And then Thomas told the Martian about the party his people were having and he pointed in the direction of his party. But the Martian only saw an ocean at low tide. They were confused and made sure that the other wasn't crazy. Then Thomas realized that he had felt as if time had been in the air earlier. So he told the Martian that the essence of time had been stopped and overlapped. The Martian thought this odd, but then asked which one of them was in the past and which in the future. Perhaps the Martian was in the future and the man in the past. And the Martian happened to be a human centuries later that had adapted to the land. Or maybe it was Thomas that was in the future and the Martian was from an ancient civilization and he was dead in Thomas' time. They didn't understand. But the Martian asked if he really saw ruins where he saw the party, and Thomas did. This saddened the Martian. Then they went their separate ways.
In this chapter, there are a lot of great things that Bradbury says. The essence of time that he makes is very complex and makes you think. Which one of the men was in the past? It was Thomas who was in the future. He saw at that time, the Martian who had lived many centuries ago. A ghost, perhaps, of a Martian that had died and was still lingering on his planet. Or maybe it was just a rift in time. Where time has no real meaning and separate times can overlap, allowing people to see people from other times. Bradbury's view on time seems to be that it doesn't always need to be separated. Time can be so different and show us so many things. Thomas could "feel, smell, and touch" time, and yet that isn't possible. Bradbury believes that on this night, there was no barrier for the two men to be separated by. Two different races could come together, but only in time. Not space. Not through their minds. But time.
Time in this novel has many meanings. The time it takes to travel from Earth to Mars is 30 days. This is important because there is a split of a month between missions, so if something goes wrong, they can't immediately do anything. Also, it is about a year in between missions. This is because man's civilization must take time to rebuild rockets to use for the expeditions. Time has a large meaning in this novel and is shown through every aspect. The Martians, however, are not as slow on time. They do not have rockets that they go to other planets in; they just live their lives. These lives are from that of ancient civilizations. Or perhaps they are advanced. Time between Earthlings and Martians is a great difference. The Martians use their time wisely and Earthlings take it quickly and apparently waste it. Bradbury is using the time element to separate missions from Earth to Mars. He is also using time to separate Martians from their ancestors.
The books that Martians have have lasted for centuries. They are old and the Martians have used them all of those centuries. This shows how the Martian civilization had been great and lasted for so long. But now, they do not have meaning. The earthlings cannot interpret the time that Martians had spent. They are not capable of understanding.
While time had meaning, it also had no meaning. Time for those who were by themselves on the planet said that they felt that there was no time. That they were drifting in space. Many people had left their large group of other Earthlings to be alone. They felt isolated in time as if it didn't even exist. It had no meaning.
In Ray Bradbury's novel, The Martian Chronicles, he discusses the elements of time. He discusses how time is meaningless, how important it is, and how it can overlap. His concepts were discussed with examples from the novel that support Bradbury's view on time. Ray Bradbury discusses in his novel, The Martian Chronicles, the elements of time.
Wolfman Jack by Lars-Åke
A Legend with Personality
I guess many of you reading this article have heard about or seen the movie American Graffiti from 1973. In that movie there was a raspy radio voice howlin' all through the night; the voice of Wolfman Jack. He played classic rhythm, blues records, and made prankcalls to people, which sometimes wasn't that popular.
Wolfman was already a legend when American Graffiti was written. He started transmitting the show in 1963. It was broadcasting from XERF in Mexico. He had a 250,000-watt transmitter to play with, which he bragged about more than neccessary. He claimed that birds flying close to the transmitter were literally electrocuted in the air.
After his appearence in American Graffiti, wolfman started doing various advertising campaigns, hosted the TV show Midnight Special for eight years, and played characters in films like "Motel Hell", "Mortuary Academy", "Married…with children", "The Odd couple" and "Dead Man's Curve" where he played him self.
Wolfman Jack was a man who dedicated his whole life to the early days of Rock'n' Roll. In an interview from 1988 wolfman once said, "Its real American music - what rock 'n' roll originally was before people turned it around and sideways and upside down. From 1958 to 1964, that's real rock 'n' roll. Then the Beatles hit and everyone sounded like them. They didn't give our boys long enough," July 1, 1995, Wolfman Jack diedat the age of 57. It was just after his regular, weekly show broadcasted from the Hard Rock Cafe in Washington, D.C. Lonnie Napier, vice president of Wolfman Jack Entertainment said that after he got home from the show, he walked up the driveway, went in to hug his wife and then just fell over. He died after his book "Have Mercy! Confessions of the Rock'n' Roll Animal," had been released. About a year later, Wolfman Jack was included in the Radio Hall of Fame, of Chicago's Museum of Broadcast Communications.

An American Tragedy by Stacey
John F. Kennedy Jr. was born November 25,1960. John-John, as he was nicknamed, was only 2 months old when John F. Kennedy Sr. took his oath of office. On November 22,1963, at 1 pm central time, JFK Sr. was shot and killed while in Dallas, Texas. Even more tragically, JFK Sr. was buried on John John's third birthday. Two weeks later, Jackie Kennedy had moved out of the White House with John Jr. and daughter Caroline to a more secluded area so the children could grow up out of the spotlight-- something that John Jr. would never really be able to do, no matter how hard they tried.
When JFK Jr. was a teenager he wanted to become an actor but Jackie persuaded him away from show business and he enrolled in law school instead. After failing the bar exam many times, he finally passed.
John Jr. worked 4 years in the District Attorney's office of New York and, in 1988, was voted "sexiest man alive" by People Magazine. After his mother died in 1994, John Jr. started a political magazine called George which first appeared a year later in 1995. John dated many beautiful women including Madonna for a short time and the well known relationship with actress Daryl Hannah before marrying Carolyn Bissett in September 1996. A few years ago, John took up flying lessons since it had been a passion of his for many years. Carolyn was not very pleased as she thought it was a dangerous hobby.
On July 16,1999, John and Carolyn were on their way to John's cousin Rory's wedding while also dropping off Carolyn's sister Lauren in Martha's Vinyard where she was staying for a couple days. They were to fly to Martha's Vinyard and to Rory's wedding with John at the controls of the Piper Saratoga. That night, Lauren had gotten off late from work which delayed their flight plans. It was now dark and JFK Jr. hesitated to fly that late. They did, however, leave that night.
The last radar stated that John's plane was 16 miles off the coast of Martha's Vinyard at about 1100 feet. The estimated speed of the plane was approximately 180 mph. Radar indicated that John's plane climbed suddenly to 2600 feet before moving slightly to the left, then to the right, before descending to 1100 feet until it was no longer on radar. Experts estimated that it only took a total of 30 seconds for the plane to hit the water. The most likely explanation for the accident has been that John experienced 'spacial disorientation'--confusion between the horizon lights and the stars above. When spacial disorientation happens, it's very easy to feel like you are flying straight.
The 'Rescue search' soon became a 'Recovery search' as there was little or no hope of finding the three victims alive in the icy water as days passed. Items began washing up near shore--debris, a plane's headrest, women's shoes, carpeting from the plane, a suitcase with a tag on it with the name Lauren Bissett and a prescription bottle bearing the name of Carolyn Kennedy. Eventually, the bodies were found; John's body still in the cockpit of the plane, while Carolyn and her sister Lauren's bodies were found not far from the wreckage. A burial at sea was then decided on and, with 17 members of the Kennedy and Bissett family, they boarded a Navy ship and had a private ceremony ending with the bodies being rolled over the ship's side and back into the water about 4 miles off the coast of Martha's Vinyard. This was just another twist in the tragedy the Kennedy family has had to endure in their lives. It's been called the "Curse of the Kennedy's."
JFK Sr's older brother Joe was killed in World War II. In November of 1963, JFK Sr. was assassinated. Five years later, as Robert Kennedy was campaigning for presidency, he too was shot and killed. Edward Kennedy will always be remembered as the driver of the car that went off the road and into a lake, resulting in the drowning of a woman in Chappaquidick. William Kennedy Smith had rape charges brought against him but was then acquited. Robert's son, Michael, was also involved in a scandal then shortly after was killed in a freak skiing accident. Joseph was forced to leave politics after his ex-wife wrote a tell-all book and, finally, the tragedy of John F. Kennedy Jr, his wife Carolyn and sister-in- law Lauren Bissett. John F. Kennedy was 38 when he died--a life taken too soon for a man who will remain forever in the hearts of America. To quote John F. Kennedy Sr.,as he once was noted saying, ~"Life is Unfair!"

Love Promise by Robin Bender
I'll sing to you upon stars of gold,
of secrets shared, of memories told,
shattered starlight, crystal castles
illuminated in the air.
in which a world where only you and I could share

I Remember by Robin Bender
I remember playing, in corn
fields and in woods.
I remember fighting, but the
end was always good!
I remember when I cried
and by you, the tears were dried.
I remember feeling special
whenever you were near.
I remember "sister" is a
word that's very dear.
I remember all the times when
we were tried and true.
But most of all,
I remember you.

Far Away by Amanda Meek
The wind blew lightly
Through the thinning trees
It was then that I knew
You were far away.
I didn't sit and cry,
I didn't celebrate,
I just sat and wished on the stars
That you could return home
Safe and soon.
It is only you who brings joy
To the skies.
Only you who brings light
To the darkest of nights.
I hope the darkness
Won't last too long
Because I miss you too much
To sit in the dark
With the stars.

Just Beyond the Horizon by Amanda Meek
Just beyond the horizon,
Lay all the dreams you have.
The ones that you can't reach yet
But that get closer everyday.
Just beyond the horizon,
Are all your hopes too.
They grow everyday,
getting farther and farther
Away.
If you keep walking
Straight towards the sun,
Just over the horizon,
Your dreams and hopes
come flooding into your arms;
All the time you spent
Running toward your goal
Will merely seem like seconds
And well worth the wait.
No matter how far
Or how near
Keep striving
And you shall acheive
