Carl Perkins by Lars-Åke

If I say "Honey Don't" or "Matchbox" you would probably think "Yeah, that's one of the Beatles." If I bring up "Blue Suede Shoes" I know you'd say "Elvis! The king!" But theese song were all written by a man who never really reached the frontline of those days pop and rock'n'roll musicians. His name was Carl Lee Perkins. He was born in 1932 near Tiptonville, Tennessee. At a very young age, Carl started to play the guitar. His first guitar was made out of a Cigar box and a broom handle. He was inspired by country, gospel and blues, and, at the age of 13, he wrote his first song "Movie Magg."

Being in 1947, Carl and his two brothers--Jay B and Clayton--started performing at a local honky tonk club known as the El Rancho Club. Their band was called The Perkins Brothers which also included drummer W. B. Holland. They appeared on the local radio station WDXT from 1950 through 1952.

In 1954, Carl signed his first Record contract with Flip Records. His first release was "Movie Magg." This was soon followed by "Gone Gone Gone," "Let the Jukebox Keep On Playing," and "Blue Suede Shoes." This was the real take off for Perkins and the record "Blue Suede Shoes" climbed to number two on the pop and country charts in 1956. That same year, Carl Perkins was going to perform on the Ed Sullivan and Perry Como TV show, but while traveling to New York he was involved in a terrible automobile accident and was hospitalized. Another young artist from the Sun Records family, Elvis Presley, was very sudden picked as a stand in for Carl Perkins.

Carl went back to country music, writing smaller hits like "Dixie Fried," "Boppin' The Blues," and "Your True Love." Perkins style influenced many artists such as the Beatles, Rick Nelson, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. Paul McCartney once said "If there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles."

In 1986, Perkins won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award for "Blue Suede Shoes" and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. On January 19, 1998, after having a series of strokes, Carl Perkins dies at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in his hometown of Jackson, Tennessee. The sound of Carl Perkins Rock-a-billy music will always live on through artists, young and old , and by many he will be remembered as one of the founding fathers of rock-and-roll.

Sleepy Hollow Movie Review by Nicole Obaid

Sleepy Hollow is probably going to be one of the best holiday movies this season. The cast itself is well put together: Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Nick of Time), Christina Ricci (Addams Family, Now and Then), Miranda Richardson (Merlin), Casper VanDien (Tarzan) and Christopher Walken (Nick of Time, Sarah Plain and Tall). It's a new take on an old story by Washington Irving. But instead of the lanky, gawky Ichabod Crane as portrayed in so many other adaptations, this Ichabod is now darkly handsome and daring (played eloquently by Johnny Depp). He comes to the small Dutch farming village of Sleepy Hollow after three people die mysteriously--heads severed by a "headless horseman." What happens afterwards is a tale of intrigue and mystery. There are pleasant and sudden plot twists and it will keep you well involved until the dramatic ending. Undoubtedly this is the best take on Sleepy Hollow ever. I bet that even Mr. Irving himself would be pleased.

Daydream by Amanda Meek

Daydream,
like the child that you are
of swimming and playing
candy
and hours of laziness.

Dream,
like the teen that you are
of dating and kissing
the perfect life
and not of endless work.

Hope,
like the adult that you are
of a husband and children
houses
and perfect hours of laziness.

Be,
like the person that you are
never let go
and always be true
to yourself.

Know Me by Amanda Meek

Kiss so passionately of my lips
to know my love for you.
Look so deeply into my eyes
to see my soul burn for you.
Hold tightly onto my hand
to feel just how I want you.
Listen so close to the song my heart sings
to hear how I wish to sing for you.
Watch every single move I make
to tell you how much I've missed you.
Be patient for everything I do
so that each thing might be more special
as I value every moment

An Angel by Robin Bender

One day, my child climbed into my lap,
and snuggled down warmly,
almost ready for a nap.
She looked at me with bright clear eyes
and asked, " Mommy, what's an angel?"
and waited quietly for reply.
"Well sweetie...an angel is a being
who is innocent and pure,
who never means harm
and has love that's always sure,
an angel is someone you always want around,
and in them,
caring is always to be found.
They are the most beautiful souls
of God's divinity,
and when they are around,
they make you feel free.
An angel is a being who is
loving and is true, and to me,
my child, an angel is you."

A "Realistic" Version of "The Night Before Christmas" by Robin Bender

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the trailer,
not a creature was stirring, not even Mom's drunken sailor.
My brother's sweatsocks were hung by the t.v. with care,
waiting to be washed and get some clean air!
All 7 kids were snug, all nestled in bed,
with visions of t.v. dinners danced in their heads.
I in my baseball shirt and Mom on the couch, had just settled down
and tried not to grouch.
When outside, there arose such a clatter that I sprang from my seat to see
what was the matter.
Then, what to my blood shot eyes did see,
a couple of guys in black, waiting for me.
And they yelled, "you catch her!", "I'll tie her", "you get the kids", "grab
the presents under the tree!"
"HA", I laughed, "there's none to see!"
They looked all around for something to steal,
it didn't take them long to see they got a bum deal.
Then, laying their fingers aside their noses, they sneezed and made comments
like, "holy Moses!"
But I heard them exclaim as they ran off with a bawl,
"This wasn't a heck-of-a Christmas after all!!

Heaven Sent Gift by Robin Bender

Peppermint and pine hang in the air,
holiday blessings make a big affair.
Headaches and bustles drown the true reason
as to why we celebrate this miracle season.
Christmas is not all wrapping and lights,
It's about giving and loving with all of your might.
A glorious gift from God up above.
Just stop once in awhile and send Him your love.
Help someone, show many smiles,
remember the burden Jesus carried for miles.
Open your soul and let His life in,
ask honestly, let go of your sin.
Through God's grace we shall all feel content.
Lay down your judgment and ask to repent.
When materialism of Christmas is putting you to the test,
ask our Savior and He'll give you rest.
We have so much for we've been blessed,
"Give thanks to God" is not enough stressed.
Stop once a day to be still with a prayer,
help someone else, show God you care.
Heavenly blessings to all and each one,
for that beautiful day God gave us His son.
