Buddy Holly A Brilliant Musician Without Comparison by Lars-Åke H
He was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7th, 1938, in Lubbock, Texas. As a child Buddy started
learning to play the violin and the piano, But he soon discovered the guitar and it became his main instrument. At the age of 13
he and a friend, Bob Montgomery, started to preform on local clubs, playing a music style they called "Western Bop" with
strong roths in country music.
After high school, Buddy and some guys formed a band called "Buddy Holly And The Three Tunes."
In early 1956 they were spotted by a talent scout from the Decca label, who brought them to
Nashville to recored some singles and demos. During this time Buddy Holly got the chance to
open a show back home at the Lubbock Youth Center where Elvis Presley was to be the leading
act.
Back in Lubbock, with lack of inspiration due to the failed record, Buddy
formed a new band with Jerry Allison and Nita Sullivan called The Crickets,
and in February 25th, 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets was brought by
producer Norman Petty to do a recording in a studio in Clovis, New Mexico.
The record "That'll Be the Day", came to be their first major hit. And with
it, Buddy and his group got a contract with the Coral and Brunswick labels.
The hit rose to number one on the pop charts and even got on number 2 on the
R&B charts. During the following months, Buddy Holly threw hit after hit up
on the charts. In August of '58, he had charted no less than seven Top Forty
singles.
With Buddy's lively way of singing and with the new sound the band made together, Buddy Holly and
the Crickets became very popular among the young teenage audience. And once they were even
mistaken for being a black group and therefore were invited to play for an black audience at
Harlem's Apollo Theatre in late 1957. When they entered the stage they were booed, but after
their third day, Holly and the crickets became somewhat of a hit.
In October of 1958, Buddy Holly met his love, Maria Elena Santiago, a receptionist at a New
York City music publishers. And later that same year he desided to move back to Lubbock with his
new wife, causing him to break up with Petty and the Crickets.
In January of 1959 Buddy Holly went on a rock tour called Winter Dance Party Tour. With him
was Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, "The Big Bopper." They traveled between
performances in busses. And after having too many engine breakdowns Holly desidef to charter a
private plane from a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa. On the morning of Feburary 3rd, Buddy
Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson took off from Mason City Airport, only to crash a
few minutes later in a cornfield eight miles from the tracks, killing everyone aboard.
This day has left a huge scar in history of rock music and will always be remembered as,
according to Don McLean's "American Pie" as "the day the music died."

THAC
Dear THAC,
I am very worried. I keep getting this overwhelming
urge to take over the world and kill everyone who
isn't supporting me. I think it's a teriffic feeling,
and I've seen people being killed which gives me
exciliration. But you see, I'm only 8, and I'm not
sure people would have a war leader who's 8. And it
must be evry boys dream to be a war leader and to
rule the world. But then I think; I will do it. And
if they don't follow me, I'll kill them. Do you think
people would take me seriously?

Dear THAC,
I have a problem which has cost me dearly lately.
My name is Mr. Cyril
Evans. I am in love with a certain Ms. Lucy
Downie. But lately she doesn't
seem to be returning my affection. I try to
apprehend her on darkened
street corners at night and woo her with gifts of
flowers and chocolate.
But everytime I approach her she moves away and
sometimes runs. Now she
even has her boyfriend, Harold Bride, to harrass
me. I'm wondering
if it's a problem with me? Do I have an offending
odor? Or am I being too
desperate? Please help or else Ii might throw
myself over a bridge.
Sincerely,
~*~

The Humorous Advice Column
Cyril Evans
But it hasn't been found, for there is no existing place. Yet, think for a
minute and you shall see, weapons and threats are not man's biggest enemy.
It's that small part of us that believe we know what we're doing. But
really we don't, and that is what is the biggest threat to mankind is. So
we still look, for that place, out of the corner of the wind.
and her touch still felt upon us.
In the shadow's
wrap, she brought light
with grace, beauty and dignant promise.
A tender symbol always etched into our mind,
as time will slowly mend the sorrow.
The memories always will be kind
