Professor Washu is thousands of years old, has the body of a 12-year-old, and is the self-proclaimed greatest genius in the universe (and she can probably back it up!). Again, depending on which version of the Tenchi story you see, Washu is either a. held prisoner on the Soja (a space fortress she built) by Kagato, later released by Mihoshi (OAV): or b. trapped in the cave near the Masaki Shrine until Ryoko inadvertedly lets her out (TV). The OAV Washu is one of the three goddesses, along with Tsunami and Tokimi. She considers Ryoko her greatest creation, and is her mother at the same time. Washu opened another dimension in the broomcloset in Tenchi's house and built her laboratory there. Through the Tenchi series, Washu has created several inventions, including Ryo-Ohki, Mecha-Washu, the floating bath, the women's-only bathroom (the door leads to the normal bathroom when a guy opens it, probably to keep Nobuyuki out), the Soja, the Space-Time Converter, the Dimensional Cannon (used to destroy Kain in the first movie), etc.
