Fave Bernie Story: He had opened up the Bowery Ballroom (NYC) last June (the 16th), and there was no way I was going to miss seeing him play, since I was curious as anyone, as to whether he could do well as a solo artist. I love being in the front of the artist, so I went early---plus I wanted to find the place;> Anyway, I was outside, talking to other early arrivals, when Bernie and his manager came out and walked to the corner....then walked back. I asked them what they were searching for. His manager stated BB was vegetarian, and wondered where he could get a good sandwich. I had noticed a deli while walking up, so I offered to get it. His manager agreed, gave me $10, and asked for a cheese and watercress sandwich on whole wheat. These were long blocks (near Chinatown) and it was a while before I got back. When I did, they had disappeared. So I went inside, and saw Bernie at the end of soundcheck. So I waited til they'd finished, then I walked up to his chair. I tapped his shoulder. "Excuse me, Bernard? Here's your sandwich." "Oh, hello, he said, "We thought you'd disappeared". 'Oh sorry, It just took me a while...' He smiled, very nice, really. I'd wanted to give him the change, but he said, "That isn't mine; look for Theresa [this was the manager, I believe]. We musicians rarely carry cash." So, I found her, and returned it.
There you go....;>*
