Refinshing my AK
An Ohio builder put this together from an ITM (OOW) receiver and a Romanian parts kit. I added the buttstock and funky front furniture. The guy who assembled it had a fatally flawed application of Brownells bake on lacquer (see it flaking at the butt end of the receiver below).
So I dutifully scraped it all off with bronze bristled brush, the followed with a wire brush on my dremel to get the last of the lacquer off.
Once down to bare metal, I used the Duracoat starter kits degreaser to clean and prep the surface for painting.
I put an aftermarket muzzle brake into my vise, and then screwed the barrelled receiver into it with a few threads. This allowed me to turn the barrelled receiver freely to paint it from all sides and angles.
Also useful, I wore a headlamp with a bright white LED beam. This allowed me to be sure that the paint was evenly applied, since the fluorescent lights in my workshop ceiling allowed too many shadows and wierd lighting to see the receiver accurately.
You can see how bad the lacquer job was from the gas tube above. I'm not refinishing this one, because I'm replacing it with one from www.ultimak.com
In the picture below you can see painted reciever, waiting to dry for second coat, and a painted/unpainted magazine for comparison.
