"About Us & Our Beginnings"
I was first introduced to the Belgian Shepherd back in 1988. Someone had previously given me a "Book of Dogs", and it was kicking around the apartment for the longest time, without my even so much as glancing inside.
I was pregnant with our first child, and having some trouble sleeping, so sitting up late one night, I decided to start looking through it to see what was inside.
The pictures in the book were mostly drawings, and I flipped through the pages in no particular order, until I came across a page that just stood out from the rest. It had...what I thought to be, the most, stunning pictures of a dog I had ever seen in my life.
It was a page with both a Belgian Tervuren and a Belgian Groenendael......the drawings were just remarkable. For some reason, it just grabbed my attention, and no other dog in the book would compare to what I saw in that particular page. I guess you could say I "fell in love"......
Over the next few years, I did a lot of research on the breed and called many different breeders to ask question after question.....anything that I could think of.
When the time came for me to finally get one of my own, it was 1996. We had two children by this time, and were finally living in a place that had the space for all of us......and a dog too!
I purchased the "Dogs in Canada Annual" Magazine, which has a lot of important/useful information on breed and dog related activities, as well as the listings for all of the breeders in any area. So I got out the pens and papers and the phone, and started the search for my puppy.
After a couple of days and countless phone calls, I decided on a pup from a litter in Alberta. Originally I had wanted a male, but at the time, there were only females left in this particular litter. My breeder Angie was (and to this day continues to be) a great resource, a never ending source of information and advice, and last but far from least, she is a fantastic person all around. With her combination of experience with the breed, training, showing, and willingness to help in any way possible....... I couldn't have gotten off to a better start.
After all of the paper work was completed, the day finally came for us to go out to the airport and pick up the newest addition to our family.
I still remember it like it was yesterday. I packed the kids in the truck, and drove them out to the airport, went inside the building and asked for my puppy. The guy brings over this little kennel from the other side of the room, and all I could see inside was a bunch of fluffy fawn colored fur, with a tiny little black face staring out at me. Her eyes were dark brown, and aside from my children, she had to be the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
We carried her home.....let her out of the kennel, and tried to contain our excitement for the next hour so as not to "overwhelm" her.
We had decided on the name "Sierra" before we had even seen her......and it seemed to fit her to a tee.
She explored around the house and proceeded to pee on the floor (well, she WAS only 8 weeks old at the time)....*smile* Then she finally curled up under the couch and dozed off, seemingly content in her new home.
I called Angie later on that night and told her how happy we all were, and how quickly she seemed to be adjusting to her new home.
From that day on - there are countless stories I could tell you....... about how much joy Sierra has given us, how much we all love and adore her, and how our lives have changed for the better with her now included in them. But I have taken up enough of your time for today.......*smile*
