Absolutely Curtains
Perhaps taking advantage of the new studio's facilities, Wright took the opportunity to play not only his usual organ, but something that sounds suspiciously like a harpsichord. The closing two minutes are taken up by the singing of thr film,s New Guinea natives. Pink Floyd were even ahead of their time with so-called "World Music."
Afternoon
A break for the band. with the roadies serving tea on stage. Roger Waters repeated this exercise on the Radio Kaos tour.
Alan's Psychedlic Breakfast
Thirteen minutes of tomfoolery, named after a Pink Floyd roadie Alan Stiles, whose voice can be heard as he performs his mourning ritual. One of its ketboard riffs would later reappear as the basis of "Profiles" the title track of Nick MAson's second solo album. Between musical passages, Stiles is heardwashing himself and frying bacon. Such musique concrete, or non-musical sound, was to become a hallmark of almost every Pink Floyd album, but none would use it as much as this piece, which was performed live unsurprisingly, only once, at Sheffield City Hall in December 1970. Durinf the performance, the band brewed tea and cooked on stage. The dripping tap which closes the piece originally continied, as infinitum, in yhe album,s run out groove. The track's subdivisions are ar 4'29" and 8'18".
Another Brick In The Wall 1-3
**ONE** The first "brivk" in Pink's Wall is the lose of his father, amn incident drawn from Waters own childhood. His pained lyics are delivered over a bubbling bass riff, with just a few staccato guitar stabs from Gilmour. For his 1987 concerts, Waters performed this and the followinf two songs as one piece. A brief snippet of the number was prefixed to Pink Floyd's 1994 performances of 'Part 2.'
**TWO** Otherwise articulate critics have used their mistaken interpretation of these lyrics as a stick with which to beat Pink FLoyd on many occasions. They see a rich, well educated Waters saying that there is no point in education. Waters is warning the cruel and vindictive teachers areliable to turn children away from the liberating education that is their birthright.
**THREE** Rejected, Pink declares that he doesn't need anything people have to offer him. Live performances, particularly during the second round of 'WALL' concerts, included extended instrumental endings. A more uptempo rendition is heard in the film.
ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE
Believe it or not this instrumental is a synthesiser and guitar work out, is the only track in the bands entire canon where the other three wrote togther. No Waters at all. The title is taken the oft misquoted advert for the worlds first mass production car, the Ford Model T, which offeredmperchasers the choice of in color they liked, so long as its not black.
APPLES NAD ORANGES
Barret's final single with the band was recorded in only two sessions, Waters claiming that Smith's botched production had spoiled a perfectly good song. Barret claimed his inspiration was a girl he has seen while shopping.
ARNOLD LAYNE
Originally recorded at the Whitehead-funded demo sessions in January 1967, this was rerecorded in the following month, at Sound Techniques with the now legendary producer Joe Boyd, As The band's first single reaching number 28 in UK charts it tells of a feeble clothes steeling man whom winds up behind bars.
ASTRONOMY DOMINE
Gilmour proves he is capable of filling Barrets shoes, even on one of the latters's trademark pieces, just as he would do again in 1994. A short organ solo is the only noticeable variation from the original.
ATOM HEART MOTHER
This track is also known as the body because it is half the album, similar to echoes on meddle. It is a story of the mind using all of pink floyd's resources. Mostly instrumental, there are few voice solos which are song in Greek. A trade mark classic that unfortunately was never duplicated in their later works.
