Denpasar

A noisy, busy, sometimes smelly city, Denpasar has a character all of her own and a visit to Denpasar is something that you should not miss. Although it is not everyones cup of tea, each time I have been to Bali, I have visited the capital and found that each time it has something different to offer. There are some unique bargains tucked away in some small unassuming markets and shops around the city. Some of the home gardens around Denpasar are well kept and a stroll around the streets can be quite pleasant. If you are a shopper, you can do a shopping circuit by starting at Mal Bali in Jalan Diponegero, onto Tragia and MA (both in the same street), Tiara Dewata shoping centre and finally end up at Mata Hari and NDA supermarket. From there it is a fifteen minute trip back to Kuta or ten minutes back to Sanur. The swimming pool back at the hotel is a welcomed sight after a visit to Denpasar. Amongst all this chaos are some interesting places and shopping venues. It is unfortunate that many westerners don't spend a day to have a look around in here. There are the gold and silver dealers, the markets, banks, museums and good shopping places. Tucked away there are some small specialty shops dealing from toys to sporting goods, as well as computer software and hardware. Also look for the florists and their magnificent floral arrangements. • Furniture Along jl Sulawesi there are a few furniture makers. Worth a look at some quality craft work and very tempting to put some in the back of a truck and take it home.
  • Gold & Silver Dealers. Located on the south east corner on the intersection of jl Hasanudin and Sulawesi. Mainly 22ct gold, with the odd shop selling 18 & 9 ct gold.
  • Textiles. Traders are found in jl Sulawesi and Pasar Badung.
  • Pasar Badung near the intersection of jl Gajah Mada and jl Sulawesi is a place every tourist should visit. Some good bargains here in crafts, fabrics, wares etc. The huge fruit, vegetable and spice market located on the lower floors is worth the look, even though there is a strong odour from the various fruits and vegetables.
  • Libby/Hero Dept store Located on Jl Teuku Umar. Caters mainly for locals but have good range of suitcases, stationery, clothing.
  • Ramayana Mal Bali. Located on jl Diponegero almost opposite Tragia department store. This is a huge complex bigger than Mata Hari. Mainly clothing and shoes, but a good range of suitcases and fashion accessories. Plenty of food outlets here to cater for your hunger and thirst. A must visit.
  • MA Department Store jl. Diponegero 50, caters mainly for shoe hunters. They also have bags, baggage and clothing, as well as clothing accessories.
  • Mata Hari. jl. Dewi Sartika 4g, is the big department store further south of the city. Good clothing, music, supermarket, souvenirs, restaurant, electrical goods, kitchen etc. Across the road from Mata Hari lies one of the largest supermarkets I have ever seen
  • Dharma jl. Hasanudin 59, is the locals' department store not far from MA.
  • Tiara department store jl. Mayjen Sutoyo 55 is just around the corner from MA. It has clothing, stationery, computer software, kitchen, electrical goods, music, and restaurant etc.
All these stores are on a circuit which is easily accessable by car or bemo and have parking facilities.
