| BEDUGUL approx. 60 km from airport A well kept secret, this serene mountain retreat is still untouched by tourism. Perhaps because it is cool up here that a lot of tourists stay south. The area is plotted with beautiful gardens, a lake that offers a wide range of water sports from para sailing to jet skiing, from fishing to canoeing. If you like trekking, walking or riding a bike, then this is the place for you. As for golfing enthusiasts, the famous Handara Country Club is just around the corner.
Accommodation Pacung Resort - ph: 21 038. 9 kms south of Bedugul this place is luxury. Views from the balcony are superb. The good news is that it isn't very expensive to stay there. Restaurants Perama Tea House, Candikuning. A small restaurant near Ulu Danu temple. Reasonably priced standard fare.Kamandalu Restaurant, Handara Country Club.Hamburgers and steaks available here. There are numerous warungs in Bedugul and Candikuning, but all hotels have restaurants.
Sightseeing Botanic Gardens - Located 500 metres from the lake heading towards Denpasar. Open from 8:00am - 4:30pm admission is approx 500rp. There are beautiful walks amongst the trees, shrubs and flowers which are in abundance. You can hire a guide.The Japanese Caves - Infamous for the execution of Indonesian POW's during WW2 who were shot when they completed their task of excavating the caves. Only accessible by canoe from Candikuning or Bedugul.Hiking - Hike 1 from bottom of Gunung Mangu on s/e side of Lake Bratan. A guide is essential and the walk is trying. Hike 2 - from the Botanical Gardens and along a well marked path across the slopes of Gunung Tapak. Does not require a guide.BACK TO TOP
LOVINA approx. 90 km from airport Just 6 kms west of Singaraja, Lovina Beach offers the tourist something a little different...black beaches. Well they are not that black, but they are not far from it. This should not put you off swimming here as this area offers some of the best snorkelling in Bali. You can swim out to the reef, as the water is not that deep. This place lacks the hustle and bustle of Kuta, althought a couple of places have got into the swing of things. Open 'til late with pool table.Sightseeing Singsing Falls Located west of Lovina, approx 1 km along Seririt Road. Here you will find the village of Labuanhaji and Singsing waterfalls. Suitable for swimming only in the wet seasonBanjar Tegehe Here you will find an interesting market place with all odds and sods. People are very friendly. Located approx 5 km west of Lovina. Look for the Banjar Tegehe sign.Monastery Well worth a visi. From Banjar you can walk to the monastery. Great views are guaranteed at the top. This a beautiful serene place and in Aril and September it becomes the scene for visiting pilgrims from everywhere. Removing shoes and whispering in low tones is the main etiquette that is observed.Air Panas An hour's walk or a short drive to the Banjar hot springs. Set in landscaped gardens the springs although sulphurous are very exhilarating. Admission is only a small fee. Take a towel.Bali Barat National Park About an hour's drive from Lovina is the Taman Nasional Barat. You have to go with a guide. This cost about 5000 rp plus entry to the park which is about 500 rp. The park is quite large in area (approx 76,000 hectares ) and is home to abundant wildlife such as wild pigs, leaf monkeys, barking dear, green fowl and the rare Bali starling and many other varieties of birds and animals. SINGARAJA - the old capital approx. 80 km from airport The only claim to fame for Singaraja was that it was once the capital of Bali. Singaraja was once the centre to many international traders who made the old capital their home. The various architectural styles stands as testament to this fact. The large winged lion statue stands as a momument to Indonesian independence and as a symbol of the spirit of the people of Buleleng. Accommodation As Singaraja is not geared for tourism, only simple losmen and hotel accommodation is available. If you are desperate for a place to stay try the Hotel Duta Karya, jalan Jen Achmad Yani 59. ph: 21 467. It is a simple fan cooled affair only offering cheap rent.Restaurants Many Chinese restaurants adorn the town. Most are found along jl Yen Achmed Yani. Try Gandhi's (no. 25) or Kartika's (next door). Further up the street there is Arina at no.53 and Cafeteria at no. 55. The night markets have many warungs and fruit stalls setup in the lanes between Jl. Durian and Jl. Gaja Mada. This the main night spot in Singaraja.Shopping Not a good place to shop, but a lot cheaper than down in the south. Film processors are numerous. Try Fuji, jl. Yen Achmed Yani and Reflex, jl. Diponegero. To change money the best place is the banks. Some in Jl. Yen Achmed Yani, Jl. Ngurah Rai. Post Office located at Jl. Gaja Mada 158 & Jl. Jenderal Sudirman 68. Open Mon-Sat 8-5 Sun 9-1. NEGARA approx. 108 km from airport
Not much here to excite anyone except for the famous bull races which occur after the rice harvest in September. There are only a few losmen and some warungs.Sightseeing Sankaragung Here you will find a new museum devoted to the gamelan. Entry is free.Palasari This village is one of two hailed as models for migration when Christians were granted government land. It has the largest Catholic church in eastern Indonesia. BACK TO TOP
GILIMANUK approx. 140 km from airport This is not a tourist town, but only a embark/disembark port for visitors to and from Java. From here it is only a 25 minute crossing between the two islands. Prices as this went to print were from 400 rp to 1200 rp. Motor bikes 1000 rp; cars 7000 rp for the crossing. The ferry docks at Ketapang and buses leave from there for Surabaya. BACK TO TOP |
