Ubud

"my favourite place"
- Approx 40 km from the airport
Phone prefix for Bali is 03 61
Ubud dates back to the 8th century and is found in the middle of the island. It is arguably the culture centre of Bali. Peaceful and unrushed, Ubud is the perfect alternative to the hectic pace of Kuta. You have just about everything here, ranging from shopping to good hotels. Check out the monkeys down at the end of Monkey Forest Rd. They are mischievous, but don't intimidate them.

    Sight Seeing

  • Bangli Town - approx 30 km north of Ubud, via Gianyar, known for it's trance healers and housing the only psychiatric hospital on the island (that must tell you something), Bangli means "red forest". Also is known for "black" & "white " magic. There are eight royal palaces in town, the most notable being Puri Denpasar, which has been fully restored. You will find the Pura Kena state temple with it's three copper pillars indicating it was built in the 11th century, just out of town in a n/e direction.
  • Penelokan - approx 50 km north of Ubud, via either Gianyar or Tampaksiring, the first village on the Kintimani tour located on the edge of the crater of Gunung Batur...the sacred volcano which is still active. Here you will see the massive remains of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago. The "hawkers " here are really as bad as flies. Best go to a restaurant with a view. Some days you may need a jumper or light coat, as it can, believe it or not, get cold.
  • Kintimani - probably the most popular destination for one day tours, the tiny village hosts various restaurants with great views of Lake Batur and the crater.
  • Monkey Forest- located at the end of Monkey Forest Road in Ubud. Well setup for monkeys and tourists, the monkeys are a continuing act of mischief and monkey business. All that should accompany you into the forest is your camera with flash (you will need a flash on your camera), and perhaps a bag of bananas, sweet potato or peanuts. No other loose gear as there is a chance that it might go missing. The monkeys are harmless, but watch the older monkeys. Sometimes they have SOL and can get a bit "aggro" if teased.
  • Neka Museum - about 1 km past the Campuhan suspension bridge. Arranged to display an historic journey through Bali's artistic past.
  • Puri Lukisan Museum - the "palace of paintings" is located not far from the Lotus Cafe in Jalan Ubud Raya. A must see to all art lovers who visit Ubud. Open from 8am-4pm. Small admission fee.
  • Goa Gajah - the Elephant Cave ( called that because archeoligists believed it looked like an elephant's head) is located at Bedulu about 5 km s/e of Ubud. A set of steps take you down to this ancient site, with a large pavillion and baths. The cave is T-shaped with small temples adorning the ends of the walls. Wearing a temple sash is required as is with all Balinese temples. The admission rice is 500 rp.
  • Gianyar Town - 15 km's east of Ubud, although in a picturesque location, Gianyar is not a tourist town. Mainly known for it's roast duck (babi gulung) and it's fine "endek" (cloth). The market here comprises of two large three storey buildings housing stalls of foodstuffs, veges, fruit, clothing and housewares. In the centre of town is one of the last remaining traditional Balinese palaces, which was built in 1771.
  • Yeh Pulu - located about 1 km from Goa Gajah, is a life size rock carving depicting rural scenes. It is unusual as it does not follow any Javanese or Balinese style of art. Discovered in the 1920's, the relief is some 25 metres long X 2 metres high .
  • Tampaksiring - located about 9 kms north of Ubud, is home to the Pura Gunung Kawi temple and the source of the Pakrisan River, a Holy Spring which bubbles up in the inner courtyard of Tirtha Empul Temple and is believed to have magic curative powers. People journey from all over Bali to bathe in the sacred cleansing spring. Legend has it that the God Indra who pierced the Earth to tap Amerta, the elixir against the treacherous King Mayadanawa, created this spring. For more than 1000 years villagers have worshipped a holy stone here on a precise day each year. This place is a joy to visit with it's ancient baths, temples and beautifuly manicured gardens. There is a small market place near the temple, along with toilets. Yes. Guides are available at a cost ..of course.
