Family Stories: First Flight

Jesse and Joel wanted to fly from an early age. They were still young boys when they decided that if the Wright brothers had been able to build their own aircraft from bicycle parts, then the Stevenson brothers could do as well.

Accordingly, the two boys "borrowed" a tricycle from one of their younger syblings and attached to its handlebars a solid wooden plank that would serve as the wings of their aeronautical vehicle. They managed to haul their contraption to the top of the barn where they balanced it on the peak of the roof.

Jesse was older, so it was decided that he would be the test pilot. He sat about the winged tricycle while Joel pushed him over the peak of the roof. Down the sloping roof he went and down like a plunging rock he went into the ground.
