Family Stories: Henry Forrest Enlists

Rusty's husband, Cliff Hicks, got Henry Forrest a job in Corpus Christi. Jesse drove him there and got him settled. Henry Forrest had been there three months when tragedy struck back home. Their father, Thomas Horace, was doing volunteer work and fell off the steeple of the 2nd Baptist Church of Sweetwater, suffering five breaks on his spine. The injury did not paralyze him, but it did make it impossible for him to work. His employer had been pocketing the portion of his wages that were supposed to be paid to Social Security so there was no financial assistance to be had. This was eventually fought by Rose and Jesse and won, but in the meantime Thomas Horace was without an income.

Thomas Stinson called Henry Forrest and told him, "You are the only brother that is not married and supporting a family. You are going to have to move back home and take care of Daddy." Henry Forrest eventually went into the military, listing his father as a dependent and sending him a regular income until a financial settlement resolved the issue.
