Family Stories: Adventures in Babysitting Rachel Fomby Stevenson's health declined in her later years and her daughters, Rose and Rusty, took up the task of caring for Forrest. On one occasion, Mother Rachel left Forrest in his crib with Rose and Rusty and went to a neighbor's home. Somehow the bacon grease in the trap on the stove ignited and the kitchen began to fill with smoke. Not knowing what to do, Rose and Rusty pushed the crib out the door of the house. In their haste, the crib overturned, spilled the baby out and landing atop him. They panicked and ran to the neighbor's house to tell their mother without thinking to pick up either baby or crib. She came back with them to find the baby fast asleep with the crib still on top of him.Rusty used to dress up Thomas and Forrest in female clothing and take photographs of them. It is reputed that some of these photos still exist, but they have yet to be published.
