Family Stories: Jesse and the Tramp

Jesse owned a mixed-breed dog named Tramp. The stories about this fabled dog abound. It is said that Rachel heard the dog barking in the yard where infant Joel was playing. Going to investigate, she saw two rattlesnakes in the yard. Tramp was alternately barking at the snakes, pausing only to tug on Joel's diaper as he tried to play with the threatening snakes. She retrieved the baby and then got out a shotgun and dispensed with the reptiles in short order.

A number of years later, Jesse had been away visiting a family so that he could be tutored in math. Thomas and Forrest were playing a game by the side of the dirt road with marbles and sewing spools in which the spools represented cowboys and the marbles were the cows they were herding. Jesse had covered himself with a sheet and came around the corner of the house, intent on scaring his younger brothers. Before the ruse could take effect, Tramp was on him, attacking what he perceived to be a threat against his young wards. Jesse found his hand held fast by Tramp's jaws and he let out a yelp and cried out, "It's me, Tramp, it's me!"
