Welcome to God's own country.Occassionally god's own nightmare. |
Pssst! Tourism industry in Kerala (yes, it is an Industry) has two major players: The Government and the others. The Government Department concerned is called, you guessed it, Tourism deaprtment. You might want to take a look at their website. |
These are the places |
The most famous beach in Kerala. Called by some as the beach paradise. Kovalam is a natural cove, er lagoon. The blue waters are usually calm. The ITDC hotel, Hotel Asoka, frowns upon the beach from its perch on top of the nearby hill. This five star hotel keeps it's premises clean. The rest of the beach is not really something you could write home about. But the view from the winding road which crawls down to the lagoon is specatacualr, well worth the nastiness of some parts of the beach.
Located just at the outskirts of the city wihin spitting distance of the Airport is a long stretch of beach mostly considered the poor relation of star tourist spots like Kovalam. This beach is frequented by the native population of Trivandrum, who are catching up onto the fact that an evening, yes, evening, at the beach is great for a healthy mind. On all evenings you will find well dressed Keralites on the beach, standing or sitting as the mood siezes them, with may be one or two gardy souls taking a dip in the benign blue water.
The seaside town of Varkala is 50 kilometres from Trivandrum. The brown cliff of Varkala, while not as famous as that of Dover, are well known in to Indian movie buffs. Sure, there is no protective railing to prevent the careless tourist from taking a free fall to the beach. But you will agree that Varkala is a worthy rival for Kovalam. Plenty of places to stay, including the beach, and the Taj Garden Retreat for those who can afford five star charges.
Another beachside locale. Surprised at all the beaches. Don't be. After all the state came from the sea. |
