The type of fighting style that a ninja uses is exclusive to the school he was taught in. One ninja could know and utilize several different styles of fighting each with a different name. The most common term I have found to describe the fighting style of the ninja is Ninjutsu.

Here are a few other fighting styles used:
Genjutsu

Yojutsu

Taijutsu

Ninpo

*"jutsu" stands for technique

Each technique must be learned or gained through methods the following table is an example...

Methods in learning Ninjutsu and Genjutsu
Ninjutsu
  • Secret Teachings of the Shinto
  • 8 methods of incantation
  • Body technique of "walking like the wind"
  • Capturing without using a sword
  • Techniques for disk harpoons and small swords
  • Techniques for scouting in actual battle
Genjutsu
(illusion technique)
  • Secret teachings of Buddhism
  • Teachings of mountain sages
  • Body technique of "walking like the wind"
  • Throwing blade (shuriken) and small sword
  • War strategies
  • Mountaineering and scouting techniques
Notice how each of these fighting styles have many methods in common. The main difference is that Genjutsu is an illusion technique best used in hiding and tricking opponents. Yojutsu is very similar to Genjutsu utilizing illusion, and Ninpo involves stealth technique. To learn more about the history of Ninpo and Ninjutsu check out the following links:
