The Flamin' Groovies was formed in San Francisco in 1965 by guitarists Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney. They originally played music heavily inspired by British band like the Beatles and the Stones. They have often been called one of the forerunners of punk rock, and they also had a major influence on the power pop genre, of which their albums produced by Dave Edmunds are great examples of.
Their first album Supersnazz was released in featuring Jordan, Loney, George Alexander (bass, harmonica, vocals), Tim Lynch (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Danny Mihm (drums). It contained both re-creations of 1950s rock and roll and more melodic contemporary songs
Their next two were the critically acclaimed albums “Flamingo” and “Teenage Head” from 1970 and 1971.
In 1971 Loney left the band and was replaced by singer and guitarist Chris Wilson, and the band began to move in a more overtly power pop direction.
Between 1971 and 1976, little was heard of the group except their 1972 anti-drug song "Slow Death" (co-written by Loney).
In 1976, they teamed up with British producer Dave Edmunds, and recorded “Shake Some Action” which was a bit of an anachronism but also a minor masterpiece.
With Edmunds they released one more album and in 1979 came “Jumping in the Night”. In more recent years several versions of the band have toured and a couple of more albums been released.
